Roethlisberger to miss opener after appendix surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has undergone an emergency appendectomy and will not play in the season opener on Thursday, the team said on Sunday.

Roethlisberger became ill before the team's practice session and although there were no complications with the surgery, he will still miss the opener against the Miami Dolphins and possibly other games.

The team named veteran Charlie Batch, a former starter with the Detroit Lions, as Roethlisberger's replacement against Miami.

The appendix attack is yet another medical problem for Roethlisberger, who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident on June 12. He nearly died but recovered quickly to join the Steelers' training camp.

The injuries from the motorcycle crash were to Roethlisberger's head, so it is not know if the appendix attack could have been the result of other internal problems he may have suffered.

Roethlisberger is the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl, leading the Steelers to last season's title at the age of 23. He has undergone three operations in the past 10 months including knee surgery last season.

In just two seasons he has posted a record of 27-4 in 31 starts for the Steelers, who also made it to the AFC championship game in his rookie season.
