Roster Problem soon to Hit

From another board, the breakdown of the NU roster:

51 true freshmen

22 Rfreshmen

30 Sophomores

14 juniors

26 seniors

The problem (yet another) that Callahan left us with does not bode well for NU --- we will have a recruiting class coming up soon where we will have fewer than 20 scholarships to give (perhaps as few as ca. 15). This is because we will graduate out a class of only 14 players soon. This really impairs the program in its rebuilding process. NU already has major recruiting hurdles to surmount --- soon restricted numbers will be as well yet another problem.

Some of the greatest damage of the Callahan years has yet to manifest itself --- poor roster management is one of those problems. It will take very crafty work on Pelini's behalf to dig out of that one.

What is the breakdown of scholarship players out of those numbers? That will tell the real tale.

It is not. The 51 freshman reflect both scholarship and walk-on players.

The problem, and it is not just Callahan's fault, is that there are but 14 juniors (at least according to what is the perspective from the other board). This is both situational and Callahan's and his staffs fault. Callahan took so many JC players (ca. 10 or so) and that recruiting class had as well (again according to the other board) some 13 players either not show up, flunk out, transfer, or quit the team. Taken collectively, the result is a junior class coming up that has but 14 scholarships. When their eligibility is up, the number of available scholarships to offer at that time, while not necessarily limited to 14, will nonetheless be limited. This is a problem.

As to everything Callahan being bad --- well no. But, there was plenty bad and the manifestation of the bad will play out over time (especially this scholarship problem). As for all Pelini being good.... that too remains to be seen. But... Pelini has a real, real challenge set out before him and we as fans whould appreciate what he is up against --- the NU rebuilding will take time --- more time than I think many appreciate at the moment.

 
Nobody here has even mentioned all the young players that have burned their redshirts. I believe the elegibility issues will be trouble as well. We'll see as time goes on. I believe defense wins games and championships. I also believe we couldn't have found a better defensive mind than Bo. Next year and the next few look promising to me. Bo will develop a few players that no body expected. I can't wait to watch it.

 
That's a LOT of freshmen.

Keep in mind a LARGE number of those 51 true freshmen (including almost all the walkons, I'd imagine) will get redshirted.

 
I don't think this is a big issue. Players transfer, quit, get kicked off the team, don't make grades, etc. I'm sure once 2010/2011 rolls around there will be 20+ scholarships available. Heck, it's looking like 1 or 2 scholaships might become available from last year's class.

The main problem, however, is there are 14 juniors. (Does that include guys like Tyson Hetzer and Ricky Henry?) That's a number that won't be added to, at least not significantly.

Probably, Calli planned to fill out the 08 class with JUCOs to balance the classes out. With various manipulations (redshirts, JUCOs, transfers, academic ineligibilities, DUIs etc.), things can be worked out. Of course, these things happen: Ohio State only had 15 guys in their 2007 class and 20 in both 2006 and 2008.

I am more concerned how these numbers align with depth at actual positions. While the renewed emphasis on the walk-on program will help, getting some scholarship D lineman will need to be a priority for this class or next.
