Russell Wilson pursued by Nebraska

Forgot to mention, sounds like he was quite wronged in NC State. Three year starter, losing his starting job for playing baseball in the spring. I understand it's tough to be a dual-sport athlete, but c'mon coach. Dude's a senior, he's put up 93 touchdowns for your team in the last three years, you don't just kick him to the curb like that.

Unless someone beat him out of the job. You don't play your second best guy because he's a senior.

There wasn't even a competition to lose. He played baseball in the Spring instead of football, so the coaches were going to move on without him.

I spoke with O'Brien and Wilson as N.C. State prepared for its spring game. O'Brien was adamant that if Wilson returned, he would be Glennon's backup. This was the price Wilson paid for being unwilling to commit full time to football.

He missed spring due to his own choice, but I think he has earned the right for this not to be the result, especially when he's playing baseball (as he's done his entire career there, yes? or am I wrong there). 72 touchdowns in his two full years of starting.

Exactly. This isn't something you do to a stud player. There's something this coach knows that led him to grant the release. I know nothing about Wilson, but the fact that he was released was enough for me to say we don't want him.

He comes in for one year and lets say takes a job from Taylor or someone else. Taylor might transfer, and we dont need to lose his skill. We have plenty of depth, and Russell only creates more questions.

I understand at first glance it seems like a good idea to add a guy with his level of talent, but it would take him a while to learn the playbook and if he comes here he will expect to start.. that really messes with the progression of Carnes and Martinez.

I know the counter argument will be : If he gives this team the best chance at winning, it is worth it.

I will argue that he hurts this team more in the long run than he helps them in the short run.

Zero interest in Russell.

I'm curious of what your definition of 'loaded' is. If it means anything other than we have many QB's on scholie's then I couldn't disagree more.

We have two with playing time. Green is not the man. I'm in the camp that believes we still don't know what we have with T-Mart yet. Carnes looked great in the spring game (which is a practice).

I'm going to go out on the limb and say we don't have much. If we have a scholy to burn for one year, why not give it a try?

This guy is only going to a school where he can come in and start right away, like Sam Keller and/or Greg Paulus. There is zero chance Bo is going to bring this guy in here and put him in front of Martinez and Carnes, two guys he's working on developing. Both already burned their redshirts, so neither is going to sit on the bench and lose a year to this guy.

If we bring him in, it means the coaches think we're hurting at QB, and if Bo was confident enough in Martinez to start him as a freshman, there's no way he thinks this.

there is not a reason to take a full season of playing time from a player that needs more in game experience. this would be almost as stupid as taking sam keller and playing him over joe ganz. im glad some of you arent running the team because if you were we would have different players at every position every season and never get any continuity. continuity makes a team good, not a "one year stand qb that played in a poor conference".

We had a freak occurrence last year where we had injuries to our top three QBs, plus Spano, a backup. We could have used, apparently, five quarterbacks last year. Only problem is, we only have 85 scholarships to offer. So you can't really have six or seven QBs on scholarship, and still go out looking for more. Last year we had:

Martinez

Green

Lee

Spano

Washington

Carnes

Let's say we have the top four QBs go out this year. And the top four RBs, and the top four LGs, and the top four CBs. At some point you start to run out of scholarships.

You have to allow for depth at every position. Four-deep, that's 88 scholarships, plus two more for kicking specialists. You only get 85 to work with. It's simply not practical to pursue every flavor-of-the-month QB or RB or WR that becomes a free agent.

Well I have confidence in our QB's lots of confidence....well besides Cody Green.

I'm sure you're in the majority there. I'm just a firm believer that our offense won't be successful without a QB that can throw the ball adequately - something neither Green or Martinez can do.

I know I'm not in the majority on this subject. A lot of Husker fans still need to realize that Martinez was a redshirt freshman last year not a Sophmore or Junior with experience but a redshirt freshman with NO experience. He still has a lot to grow as a QB but surprised a lot of fans last year with his athletic ability.

I'm a firm believer that a lot of the issues that caused our offense to fall apart in the last 4 games last season was our offensive line, the play calling, and an injured QB who hurt his ankle twice within 3 weeks.

Taylor Martinez can run the ball adequatley something that Bo loves to see and wants that Cody Green couldn't do. It's a building process with Martinez on his throwing mechanics and he'll get better it just takes time.

I'm not saying that he is Cam Newton. However, the argument that one-year transfer players can't make a difference is totally bogus. Plus, having a senior coming in July is not the same as having a freshman coming on to campus in the fall- I sincerely doubt that "learning the playbook" would be a problem... I think you're safe though. After all the "confidence" Bo showed for Martinez last year, I don't see him going after another QB right now.
