Scott Frost

In terms of poor decisions, how can you say Frost going to Stanford was a poor decision? Bill Walsh was the head coach. Bill Walsh is the forefather of the WCO. Frost still holds I believe the class C passing yardage record here in Nebraska. Bill Walsh recruited him hard. Frost didn't come back to NU because of loyalty felt here. He came back to NU because Walsh retired and the next guy wanted to change the offense. If you wanted to play QB at the professional level, would you go to Stanford or Nebraska considering the offenses ran in the early 90's? If Walsh had stayed for Frost's last 2 or 3 years at Stanford, he would not have come back to Nebraska.

Still doesn't explain why WALSH moved him to SAFETY and he came back to NEBRASKA to play QUARTERBACK. What you just said completely contradicts what actually happened and what Frost said regarding his transfer. I am sure the exact link is still available if you go back far enough on here.

Yeah, why don't you go back and get the quotes from Walsh as to why he moved him to safety. He played safety there for 2 years because Walsh said, "He's simply too good of an athlete to keep on the bench". You know there was some debate over a QB that went to Omaha out of Cambridge. He was an all american there and some thought he should have come to NU. Before Eddie Thompson became an all american QB at Omaha, he played receiver for a couple of years. Why? For the same reason Frost played safety at Stanford. Each coach recognized they had veteran leadership at QB, but each also knew they had outstanding talent being wasted on the bench. Stanford had a quality QB while Frost was a freshman and sophomore. Frost wasn't brought in to start immediately. Frost was just too good of an athlete to waist his eligibility riding the pine. Why do you think he even got a nod in the NFL in the first place?

The allure of playing QB for Walsh was what pulled Frost to Stanford in the first place. Walsh did to Frost what most coaches told Frost in the recruiting process, put him at safety. He was just a better politician about it and was more revered in the coaching ranks so that he wouldn't get blasted for doing it. Frost was a hell of an athlete, but who's to say when there was no more "leadership" at QB that Walsh would have moved him back? Chances are he would have stayed right where he was, which would have defeated the purpose for why he went there instead of NU in the first place. Nice try.

Frost was listed as a top 5 QB in the country coming ou of high school, so I highly doubt many/any coaches told him that he'd be switched to safety. In 1994, the year Walsh ended up retiring and Frost transferred to NU, Frost started at QB for the injured senior QB Steve Stenstrom. Even though Frost was the starting safety, he was still the #2 QB behind senior Steve Stenstrom. When the #1 went down, Frost became the starting QB for Stanford his true sophomore season.

It was a bad situation. Walsh retired from Stanford because he was being forced out due to recruting violations. In fact, his recruiting of Frost was found to be in violation once the NCAA found out that Joe Montana was present during the recruiting process.

If Frost would have stayed at Stanford, he had to beat out two other QB's. One was a senior who was already listed behind Frost in 94 and the other was a redshirt sophomore who again was listed behind Frost in 94. The redshirt sophomore (Tim Carey) was actually recruited the same year as Frost and told to redshirt while Frost did not due to Frost being the heavily favored starting QB after Stenstrom had graduated.

Chances are he would have done in 95 in Stanford just like he did in 94, started for the Cardinals as a QB. Nice try.

So how did Frost do in 94 when he played QB? The same Stanford team that went 3-7-1. He started 5 games at safety, 1 game at QB(which they lost to a 4-7 Cal team). Joe friggin Dailey started 11 games at QB, how many more did he start for the Huskers after that? What happens one year doesn't necessarily transition to the next, especially with a coaching and philosophy change.

Everything that I remember about Frost's recruitment is that many wanted him as an athlete because of his size, speed and toughness, and Walsh sweet talked him with his talk of the pros and his meeting with Montana, then turned and put him at safety after trying to change the way he threw and seeing that he wouldn't work out at QB for him.

Willingham took over the following season and there is no telling what he would have done. I would put my money on him not putting a confused QB/S with screwed up mechanics to be his QB. Just my .02. Noble effort. :thumbs
