So Greenbay needs a FG to won. Defensive penalty gives GB the ball with no seconds left. One play. Detroit rushes 3.... (like NU) Rogers fires a cannon shot (like BYU). TE Rogers boxes out DB's... (like BYU) TD Greenbay

Announcers say first mistake was rushing only 3...... 2nd was getting boxed out in the end zone......

Looked just like the BYU debacle.....

with all of the hail mary's that have happened throughout history, why do coaches still choose to only rush 3?

Except Aaron Rodgers basically threw the ball 70 yards. That arm strength is dagnabit unreal.

No doubt. The announcers said if they allow him to get outside the pocket and get a running start, he easily gets it into the end zone. I laughed as it happened and then they said he had it been at Jerrys world he would have hit the scoreboard on the ceiling as high and as far as he threw it. Even then, it looked effortless.

The best reason to drop 8 in those situations is to guard against a play that isn't a Hail Mary. If you rush too many you could be outnumbered near the boundary on an underneath throw with blockers available. 8 also allows press coverage while keeping 3 deep defenders to swat the ball. As always, the defense has a disadvantage in that they must cover the entire field while the offense just has to outnumber at the point of attack.

There's certainly a good argument, especially in true Hail Mary situations, that dropping 8 allows a QB with a less than stellar arm to get to a launch spot that allows that throw to be made.

Jack Gangwish thinks the Detroit D-line did a great job of maintaining contain on Aaron Rodgers that play.

The worst thing was the guy who caught the TD is playing against my fantasy team. I hope the whole Lions coaching staff is canned and they bring someone who knows how to use AA.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was all....
