Shatel: Nebraska would be wise to remain on good terms with Frost

I am a Scot Frost fan, some on here were not at a time long ago. He is a smart kid, he knows that there is lot more to being a head coach, and after what went down here, it is far more obvious.
If he returns to Nebraska, and has stated he wants to, he will be well prepared in all avenues. I admire him for that. Our AD knew he was not ready, he knows he is not ready. We are dealing with a winner, a proud Nebraska winner. He will return when the time is right for him and Nebraska.

Nebraska is a destination job. Not a place to learn how to be a HC. I hope we never hire a first time HC ever again.

Look at it this way.
You just bought a shiney brand new Chevy Cobalt, for 7 years had nothing but problems with it, constantly in for repair/consultation. Seemed to be running hot all the time, finally blew up in the garage, caught everything on fire around it and burnt the garage down.
Would your first call be to the Chevrolet dealer to buy another Cobalt. Most likely you would go a different direction.
Seems simple enough to me.

Came from within the program, had a lot of control over the program prior. Head coach moved to AD, took some of the pressure off of the daily CEO duties, I would guess. Frank was a first time head coach to, with the same situation and failed.
Today it is different, much harder dealing with the whole situation I think. Far more responsibilities, kids with different ideas, social media, on and on.

You're talking about guys that spent their majority of their lifetime playing then coaching here at Nebraska. Frost probably understands the environment more than many, but still, I'd like to see his resume' built a bit more before he's considered here. Preferably as a HC elsewhere.
Tom Osborne is a legend and probably the greatest coach ever. Yet we continue to use his name as if he's some sort of standard or something.

Devaney was a coach at Wyoming before Nebraska which pretty much negates anyone's Tom Osborne argument. Both ways can work or be a disaster.

While Osborne may not have been (and remember, his tenure was extremely close to being deemed a complete failure in '77 and '90) Solich, Callahan, and Pelini certainly were.
And comparing anyhthing to the unprecedented 5 year run under Osborne is ridiculous and has to stop. Osborne was 10 years into the job before he had the program in position for a national title in the bowl game. 20 before actually getting over that hump. But yes Osborne was special. We all know this. He is not the norm. He is the rarity.

Whoever is making the argument no first time HCs, I hope you would've been furious if we somehow hired Narduzzi or Kirby Smart. Defense first yes, but they also have established themselves under two very good defensive coaches, just as Frost has offensively, at Oregon.
I've seen those names a lot on 'dream lists'.
Frost, imo, is ready to be a HC... just not here. Let him get his feet wet somewhere else.
Give him the program in 5 years after Riley is done.

Being a first time head coach at the level of Nebraska this day an age is far different than when Tom took over. More CEO tasks, managing the media, nationwide instantly, dealing with kids and social media, handling recruiting, and taking care of a lot more inner city kids than the past dealt with. It is not an easy job. Lower level experience makes it easier to step in. I think Scott Frost is a great coach, Kirby Smart, Narducci(spelling) are all great DC's. Both of them have been around the management for longer than Scott.
That is the main reason the past staff failed. Knowing how to do everything, instantly at a grand level. It normally does not happen. In sports or the business world.
