Sherman: As problems mount, judgment must wait on Mike Riley at Nebraska

i am tired already of hearing how his success is totally dependent on his recruits alone......that's bullsh#t, that's a ready made excuse for poor game management??
Hunter94, I am tired of it as well. I am also tired of the Bo Haters cherry picking the worst performances and games of Pelini's seven years and then comparing those to Riley's half a season.

So I say give Riley seven years and then compare his best with Pelini's best and his worst with Pelini's worse straight up without any wiggle room, "what ifs", "bare cupboard" "he was lucky", Bo would have done worse, etc., etc.

Riley might not be the right guy, but does anyone want Eichorst picking another head coach for Nebraska???

So I can take 6 1/2 years more of Riley, let's see if his supporters can...
It maybe not the right reason to keep him around, but seven years is fair and it will get rid of the perception that NU is impatient and if we did have to get rid of MR, then we would have a better chance of getting a higher profile coach. Part of that is Harvey who doesn't want the HC to be the face of the school like TO was. Maybe his replacement will be willing to take a back seat to a high profile coach if he runs a clean program and wins if MR doesn't work out.

Luck has nothing to do with it. You can't leave football games up to luck. You make your own luck. Take the opportunity away from the other teams.

We're dead last in pass defense.

Not getting consistent pressure on QBs (I'll admit injuries are killing us here).

We constantly let teams out of 3rd & forever.

We aren't forcing turnovers.

The offense isn't helping the defense with points and TOP.

We're rolling a d20 to determine who plays RB every week.

We aren't winning field possession.

You won't win games with that formula. You can't rely on luck. You have to rely on discipline, character & desire.
Talk to Nate Gerry about not having stone hands or the rest of the secondary who dropped to more easy INT's. That isn't on the coaches, they were all in position and in Gerry's case the ball hit him in the numbers.

That is because TA can't hit the broad side of a barn right now. Which ties into the third point is that we don't have any good RB's right now. Not at least of the level we were used to with Helu, Burkehead, and Ameer to hide how bad the OL is.
I disagree with everything but your TA comment. I think our passing game has just hit a brick wall all together, not just him. I haven't been impressed with some of our WRs not fighting for the ball.

It is entirely on the coaches we aren't forcing turnovers. You play like you practice. They need to run through drill after drill after drill to get it right. Gerry isn't the only one missing INTs. Everyone in our secondary has missed multiple picks by simply not locating the football. That's coaching.

They need to pick 2 main backs and a 3rd to spell and stick with it. You can't expect them to improve with inconsistent reps. The OL is a discipline issue. No reason to be lining up the backfield(They're cheating their pulls) and holding so much. That's coaching.

I understand all of your concern and complaints, but the bottom line is that nothing is going to get better until this inept staff is gone.

Not sure if trolling. Pelini got 7 years because he consistently won 9 games....you realize we aren't projected to make a bowl game right now?
Nope, not trolling. "In for a penny, in for a pound." I want to see this whole Mike Riley thing play out completely, and keeping him for seven years regardless of performance helps Nebraska avoid the reputation of not giving coaches a fair chance and having unrealistic expectations.
No offense, but that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. No program -- especially a traditional power such as Nebraska -- is going to keep a lackluster coach for 7 years. We have nothing to prove to anybody, except for the fact that we have high standards and aren't going to settle for mediocrity.

at the current rate, he doesn't get past 3 years, i guarantee it.

Riley's in for at least next year....get used to it. You can't let some hotheads force you into a bad business decision with Pelini then come right back and do it again.

You guys are funny…..until RIley, Banker and crew got there…..THE BEAVERS NEVER WON. What was it….28 years or so with a losing record? If you are expecting Florida St, , etc, YOU LIVE IN THE WRONG STATE. Oh and by the way…Oregon is not going to win a National Championship either. These guys are good coaches and their players know it. They don’t cheat, they get players to the next level, they legitimately care about their players and families and oh and they do win with out the cream of the crop players – who very rarely want to go to OS. Be a Beaver Believer and cheer them on! Thanks Banks, Riley and Players! Go BEAVS!
Other comments sound like this board. We need to finish the season and knock yourself out about Riley and crew all you want during the off-season.

I don't know that any coach deserves seven years if they're not getting it done. However, we did give Clownahan four. Therefore, I'd settle for a time table of four years to see what transpires.

Alright, another article that suggests the 'Huskers are snakebitten without looking at the whole game? Gotta love this garbage narrative showing up lately.

Bottom line, our team is losing not because of last minute antics, but because of the failures by the coaching staff in the preceding 59:00. This is how Dr. Tom coached and what he preached, and it's really sad that Nebraska fans are willfully choosing to ignore that bit of advice to further their agenda that this team is 'snakebitten' or 'unlucky'.

You make your own luck, and these coaches need to quit putting the kids in a position to fail over and over again. When (If, really) the coaches figure out how to competently coach for 59:00 a game, the last 1:00 won't matter, and this whole 'bad luck' narrative will die.

A team that isn't great will find themselves in a lot of close situations at the end of games. 5 of 2014 games and 5 of 2013 games were one-score differences.

There's been almost no time given, by some, for the new coaches to flip culture and scheme and take this team to a place where the likes of Iowa, Minnesota, McNeese State, and Wyoming are not one score contests...which of course is the long term goal.

If there's a disappointing narrative, that's the one.

The disappointing narrative to me is that he will be here for a while so bitching about it for the next two or three years isn't going to improve our chances to recruit and get better one bit. Anti-social media has not been kind to the Husker program.
