Exactly. Quarterbacks in the past would be ridiculed because a throw like that was emblematic of their poor passing abilities. Dylan doesn't get ridiculed because that's the rare exception rather than the expectation.

This is crazy, what do you call the Bonner wing play off the jet sweep motion to Barney?  That’s been set up for weeks?

 
Bad whiff by Evans.  But Raiola probably needs to know he has an outlet if he needs it.  Dump it off instead of trying to break the tackle.


 
Why do you not hit Barney on the speed out?  That's what this play is designed for. He's open.  No idea why he didn't throw it.  Then gets sacked.

He couldn’t throw the ball harder on this play because he had to drop it in over a defender. Actually a very well thrown ball. But, there may have been a better option somewhere else.

Fair enough.  Then he should probably look for other options - including the wide open guy underneath - instead of trying to fit it in between three defenders, as you mentioned.

 
Starting at 1:44, there are two straight plays where Fidone is wide open in the flat, and Dylan is looking to that side of the field at first.  But he goes to other, less open options instead.

That’s a really good question.  I also don’t understand the reason to roll him out on that quick of a play design.  It should be one step and throw.   On a semi-roll out like that it’s at least 3 steps before he can even think about throwing the ball and at that point, even with a completion, Barney has no chance at turning up field.   
 

The ball should be out of DR’s hands just prior to the break.   Easy 5 yards with the chance of a bigger play if a tackle is broken. 

 
Starting at 0:18, there are two straight plays where he could have taken the quick, easy throw and picked up some yards.  Instead, he tries to force it deeper to a more-covered receiver and gets nothing. 

Then he short-arms a quick pass that would have gotten yards. 

At 1:00, he short-arms a pass to Fidone that should have been a first down. 

Then the next play he does a nice job avoiding the first guy but then creates pressure by trying to run out right instead of sitting in the pocket.  

Already covered the last two plays where he has an outlet/quick throw and doesn't take it.

It's tough to have much of an offense when you're getting QB play like this.


 
Curious how much of Raiola's struggles were the Rutgers defense giving unexpected looks, and how much was just him being spooked by throwing that INT. Skipping the easy look and trying to hit a big play has absolutely been a tendency of his all year, but it was clearly worse in the second half. I'm thinking he may have been scared that the easy throws were traps, but you've got to at least try and run the play as designed. Got 2 weeks to figure it out at least! 

 
It was the worst game for both Satt and Raiola, but I wouldn't fire either of them. It's better to learn from a win than a loss. 

To put it another way, wouldn't Rutgers fans have a better case for firing their OC after all his failures Saturday? Or to be honest, all the teams on Saturday and Sunday who turned in shockingly bad performances? 

 
I think we all (myself included) see something on TV or at the game that appears to be obvious to us without taking into consideration 1) The speed of the game especially for a true frosh plays a huge roll and 2) We don't see it from his angle. I understand that some missed reads or poor throws are just that, missed reads and poor throws, however we have to take other factors into account as well. While watching the game, I wondered how much the team was "trying not to lose another 1 score game" instead of just playing with confidence like they did earlier on in the 1st half.

When Nebraska goes into the locker room with a 14-0 lead, they take stock of all the things that worked. We sometimes forget that in the opposing locker room, a DC is being paid good money to make sure those same things don't work as well in the second half. While some like to imagine a second half of Rahmir Johnson gashing the defense, bleeding the clock and padding the lead, it clearly wasn't going to work that way. 

But yeah, I got the "trying not to lose" vibe, too. Playcalling takes some blame for sure, but to my eye Dylan Raiola was simply missing plays he usually makes. Not sure I want to watch the game again, but it also seemed like the OL gave him less time to make decisions. 

Defense had the urgency and consistency the offense didn't, and that's why we won a one score game. Hoping the offense has the chance to return the favor.
