SI on Riley

Pretty cool blurb from page two:

The Huskers have a huge indoor practice facility for football, but there’s another indoor facility on campus that’s part of the student rec center. Riley toured it in the spring and remarked offhand that it needed to be re-turfed. Eichorst’s reply: “Just tell me what you want to do.” It’s scheduled to be finished this summer, and will be used to give Nebraska added practice space this fall.
Also:

In Lincoln Riley has reunited with more than just Banker, who came of age in an era that revered Nebraska football and didn’t hesitate to go there when the chance arose. “I knew what the N stood for,” Banker says. “Excellence.”
Ok, that's awesome that they're redoing the Cook, because it was in desperate need of it. I don't think it's had new turf since it was opened. Its all matted down now, some of it is actually hard, and the endzones have more minor topography than a beach. But as a former student reopening it to the football team is bullsh#t. They have more than enough space already. The Cook is the only indoor field house the students have, and it already hosts a multitude of intramurals and clubs, not to mention joggers and pick up football, soccer, ultimate frisbee and other games.

I bet it will still remain open to the students, just not on practice days. My guess is the only time it will get used by the team is when it is sh**ty outside and they want to split the team to get more reps.

I know for a fact Cook has gotten new turf since it opened.. My freshman (and maybe sophomore) years it was the old AstroTurf, then when Memorial went to Field Turf, it did as well. That was ~15 years ago, so I'm guessing the Field Turf has been replaced since.

I got some nasty rug burns playing pickup football on the old AstroTurf. And playing intramural soccer on it was like playing on gym floor, the ball rolled for ever.

Michael Rose-Ivey:

“He got really mad one day at practice and yelled, “Jiminy Christmas!’” Rose-Ivey says. “And I thought, ‘Well, this is totally different than what we just had.’”
Love it.
lol
Ha ha! “Jiminy Christmas!’” will be my new expression of dismay on Huskerboard.

Can you imagine where you had a job with such power? Just basically mentioning something in passing and your boss says," just let me know what you want to do."
Not attaching strings or ultamatums. Looks like Eichorst might be improving as an AD.
Or maybe it's just cuz Riley is HIS guy
Some truth to that, no doubt.

But Eichorst may have picked a guy who is better to work with, too. Also part of the job.

I think we had first hand testimony on here from a coach in one the minor sports at Miami, saying Eichorst didn't visit the locker room much or shake a lot of hands, but did a good job of getting the many different sports in the Athletic Department the resources they needed. As someone just mentioned, even when he was on the short leash, Eichorst gave Bo more of everything he needed.

I don't remember the AstroTurf and I was there about the same time. But at any rate, it's nearly 30 years old so I'm sure it's gotten a new surface at some point but even if the turf is 15 or so years old, I'm sure it's due to be replaced.

This is why I was thinking. When I first went to college the team did use this but after they built the other facility they stopped using cook. I loved playing pick up games of football there.

According to wiki, Memorial got Field Turf in 99. So I assume Cook would have been done at the same time.

So I exaggerate, I was actually going to say it probably hasn't been replaced since our last championship. At any rate it was in terrible shape. 15 years is an eternity for the amount of use it sees. You could go to the sides where use was minimal and see the difference in the blades of turf. The good blades are probably a quarter inch thick if not more while the main field is less than a sixteenth and all matted down. It just looked awful, and frankly I thought it was kind of embarrassing that they showed it off on tours.

I'm sure that's right. I was thinking the Field Turf came in right before I got there but apparently not. Apparently it's been too long.

Which sounds ok but that's usually around 230-400 maybe even till 6. Which is a peak time for student use at the rec. If TO could make practice work inside Memorial I'm sure they can make due with the facilities they have now.

You must never had got a rug burn from the old Astroturf. That would have made you remember it.

I graduated 14 years ago yesterday. It has been a long time...

They close it off quite a bit anyway for club sports and intramurals. So it's not like they aren't used to it.

That's what I said, it host so many activities as is I don't know that it can support the football team again.

I honestly don't think they will ever use Cook anyway unless Hawks has something go wrong with it and the weather is bad, then maybe.
