In the meantime, the Nebraska discussion has to be about much more than merely talent acquisition. Husker coaches must emphasize overall program identity while recruiting specific types of players to fit well-defined systems. In addition, player development is critical.

If winning championships was only about talent and recruiting rankings, Alabama would've prevailed Monday night.

"Those great businesses out there, those great programs, they don't plateau," Swinney told thestate.com last winter. "How do you do that? Well, you have to constantly reinvent, reinvest, reset, learn, grow, change. You have to do that. You don't just change to change, but you have to always challenge yourself each and every year to say, 'OK, well this may be how we've done it, but is it the right way?'"

Nebraska fans hunger for the program's return to elite status. Listening to Swinney, and pondering Clemson's rise, you understand the extraordinarily difficult nature of the challenge.

Also, I thought this was interesting when you start talking about premier facilities:

From the start, Swinney pushed Clemson's administration to devote more resources to recruiting. He pushed for more resources, period. Now, look: The Tigers are on the verge of opening a $55 million football complex that will have all the usual player amenities, like a weight room, a dining hall, meeting rooms and offices. But it also boasts a players' lounge that features pool tables, miniature golf, a golf simulator, laser tag, a bowling alley, sand volleyball courts and a 24-seat high-definition theater.

Oh, and an indoor slide connecting one floor to the next.

Dabo and Bo had remarkably similar starts to their career. But just as Bo hit his plateu in the 2010 Big XII Championship game against Oklahoma, Dabo's program kept momentum going strong.

 
Why should Husker 'fans' listen? They can't coach or recruit players from up in the stands or from their arm chairs. The only thing I'm 'hearing' from that article is that Dabo and co develop their players and we don't but that's not new news.

It's officially the off season...

100℅ agree. The fans make 0 decisions when it comes to this stuff it's all on the administration and thr staff it hired. I don't see a 63 year old coach changing much if anything at all

 
What Dabo has done at Clemson is a blue print to success. It starts in the team believing in the coaches and common direction. NU, at times, seems more like a rudderless ship. As Boulware said, those who came before laid the cornerstones..... Continually we have said things along the line of "now maybe the guys who didn't buy in are gone".....That's a problem. No shared vision. No stepping stones. No building on from one year to the next.

Dabo has also developed talent, assembled a great coaching staff and has fired his DC when not getting it done. (Kevin Steele after the Orange Bowl blowout to West Virginia)

Plus, they amped up their recruiting.

247 Composite rankings since Dabo took over.

2009: 31st

2010: 28th

2011: 10th

2012: 15th

2013: 15th

2014: 17th

2015: 9th

2016: 11th

You don't have to recruit top 10 every year, but you gotta get some top classes.

 
Who knows, maybe if nebraska kept Bo they'd won 11 or more the past two seasons. But I guess nebraska had to look long term. Which is why they hired Riley, right? For the long term?

As Landlord very accurately states it, Bo undoubtedly plateaued in that final Big XII title game. That was it. And, some of the talent on that team was talent he hadn't even recruited.

If you have disdain for the idea of Riley because he's too old for the "long game," please don't tie it into the idea of giving Bo more time. Unless you were ok with the seemingly endless conference title drought but still "winning nine games a year."

 
This may be the recruiting class where we amp it up. It's so hard to tell as we race towards signing day but this class still has the potential to be a significant upgrade from the past 5 years at least. That being said it could stay completely in neutral from our previous trend as well. We will see soon enough

 
we have a dinosaur for a coach, thinking outside of the box at this stage of Riley's career is highly unlikely.

As Dabo pointed out, you have to always try to get better and change when change is needed. Bo wasn't, that's why he was fired.
