Situational plays

Red November

Special Teams Player
Our 3rd Down conversion was (5-16) less then 33%. Why? Was their a common play called on 3rd that we just weren't getting?

I have heard repeatedly that the staff and team go over these types of plays all the time in practice. Are they that difficult to succeed or are the players not doing what's asked?

Uh....the problem was that Cally wanted to run the ball on first and second down...every drive. Way too many 3rd and longs to deal with. I really hoped to see him mix up the play book, I have no idea what he was thinking. We dont need to be saving any of the offense for later, we have to go after every game this year. It seemed like Billy was calling the plays blindfolded and didnt know where we were on the field-he wanted to run up the gut between the 20's, and then throw the ball when we were on the goal line. Made absolutely no sense! :bang

as a former NFL coach, it really makes you wonder when you see his play calling.....hell, everyone knows you have to pass occasionally on 1st down, so why was that not being done?.....the play calling on the 1 yard line really has me baffled.....but then it appears we better get used to some uncoventional play calling by this guy....does he really think his genius is 2nd to none when it comes to play calling?? is the offensive coordinator calling any plays or is Cally calling them all?

Norvell is the one relaying what calls should be played. He's the one in the booth and looking down on the field. Callahan is just making sure the communication between Norvell and Zac Taylor is there.

OK...

HOW MANY TIMES did T.O., after a nice gain by RB for a first down, on 1st PA pass for a huge gain!!!

All the freaking time!!!

I think Callahan needs to pull some stops against Wake. Seriously. He needs to play-call the HE77 out of it. Not for us fans. But for the players. They need to see that he can LET them dominate a game by smarts, not just athletic ability.

Are you sure about that, from my understanding Norvell simply lets Callahan know where the ball is, Callahan does most of the play calling on his own with some help from Norvell.

I remember that many times Callahan asks for suggestions/advice on which plays to call. Before the other coaches really new him, they would give him a ton of suggestions, but now they understand him more and give him just a few ideas.

From what I hear, Norvell looks for mismatches, openings, inconsistencies and relays them to BC with maybe a possible play idea, but BC calls the plays.

Thanks for the insight AF_Husker, and welcome to the board.

Yes, the play calling against maine was odd. Three passes into the endzone in goal-line situation. The only one that looked decent was the fade to the corner of the endzone, which just was not executed well. Oh well, I hope that the playbook was just shut tighter than a drum, and that he just wanted the players to get used to a few core plays. HOPEFULLY we'll see much more varied play calling next weekend against wake, and much better play calling at that.

I guess i should have been more clear Eric when i said "what should be played". I guess to reword it in a different way, like AF Husker mentioned, Norvell looks for mismatches on the field, open gaps in the opposing backfield, etc and suggests what plays should be run to maximize our offense. The final call is up to Bill Callahan, but usually when your OC is in the booth giving you suggestions, it's better to go with the suggestion then to try to run something that might not work. To me, that's why i consider Norvell the guy really calling the plays rather then Callahan because he has a better view of the other team.

I hoped for that last year...but he did the same thing against Pitt. Don't doubt his ability to do things like that.

All right now which one is it? "What's Callahan doing? He passed from the one yard line!" "Callahan always ran it the first two downs!!! BOOOOO" Jeez guys I am not 100% with him but lets give him at least a small chance. #1, he had no timouts with 55 seconds left in the half and the ball. Maybe enough time for one running play at the end. But where? At the front end, you're rushed for time. At the end, now your field goal is compromised by time with a true freshman kicker.

WF is the opponent now. What happens if they hang 35 or soemthing on them and the defense holds true? Of course, they could go screw the pooch for 48 minutes and lose as well. But sitting aroung here and Monday Morning QB'ing this guys choices when the man has probably forgotten more about fotball than most of us could ever know. No matter how many claims that "I" could have coached that team to a 30 point victory.

If you had paid attention to the game, my post wasnt too hard to pick up on. Between the 20's, Callahan would run the ball....then when we were threatening the end zone, he would try to pull out the passing game. Get it?

Did anyone notice how Maine COMPLETELY picked up on Wilson coming into the game after...crap...was it Green or Grixby...SOMEONE got knicked up and left the game...Maine IMMEDIATELY called the long pass play to Wilson's side, and WHAMMO, TD.

I have yet to hear us pick up a mismatch and take advantage of it.

Please call me out if i'm wrong, I can and would LOVE to take it  :(

I think it was Bowman that got hurt.
