Some BTN Notes from August 11th practice

It's amazing to me how a school the caliber of Nebraska can struggle so much in getting a player who can complete a pass.
TA is absolutely not a passer that generates a lot of confidence but he also is very far from being the worst passing QB Nebraska has ever fielded and we have almost always managed a reasonable offense.

TA 2014 Stats

13 games

345 attempts

184 completions

53.3%

2695 yards

7.8 yds/att

22 TD's

12 Int's

207.3 yds/game

I don't think this is terribly far off from the typical Nebraska pass productivity. I would have a hard time saying we can't complete a pass.....

but yes, some of his picks, or near picks, can be cringe inducing at times. Pretty confident that a little time with Langsdorf and MR will only have him improving. I think we'll be okay as long as the O line and rushing attack stays reasonably strong.

Typical Nebraska pass productivity was only needed to complete passes to wide open players off of misdirection and play action after running the ball 70% of the time.

Tommy is far from the worst passer here, absolutely, but within the context of what he's going to be asked to do, he might be the worst fit for his role as a QB than we've had in a while.

Guys, it's the fifth practice completed in Fall camp, and they're installing a lot of things and testing them out to see what the players can/can't do. At this point, we need to be more observant than reactionary.

Well then we might be in for a pleasant surprise. I think these coaches just may ask the players to do things they are capable of reasonably executing. I don't think we'll see near as much of pounding the square peg into the round hole that we've become accustomed to. Riley may not get the exact offense he wants with Tommy but I do think they will tweak it to something that should be more than acceptable.

Where do you think we are right now?

Man I am not sure what you guys want sometimes. Lets just think about how little he needs to improve in some areas to be considered a good passer. At last years rate of throwing the ball he would need to complete 1.7 more passes a game to reach the magic 60% threshold that is considered good. Less than 2 passes a game. One less drop by a receiver in a game, and there was plenty last year, and one more throw on the money by him and you have your 60%. He really needs to cut down on his ints. Raise the average up to about 60% and cut the ints to about 6-7 and you have a pretty decent QB.

Conner Cook is considered a sure fire NFL prospect and he only threw for 57% last year.

Hackenberg completed 55% last year and threw 3 more Ints than TA and is considered a top 10 draft pick right now.

He is not nearly as bad as most make him out to being.

I agree. I was trying to point that out by posting his stats. Not sure why my post was targeted with the scolding.....

I have been hearing the players look better physically, I am interested to see that.
That can be taken one of two ways that I still haven't heard an opinion on.
Is it mentality or actual physicality?

I guess the third way is just the look, but that doesnt mean squat.

I've heard that too, and it sounds like a comment on their physical appearance. But we hear that every year, and the BTN guys said it and said they've noticed this each of the last several years they were here, so that covers the Dobson Era.

I take these comments as typical offseason blather. What else are they going to say? In a Volleyball commentary a little bit ago I saw a note about the color of the shoes the girls were going to wear. Because... offseason.
