Apparently this was supposed to fail. They had no expectation that it would reach orbit. They were just gathering data for future launches.

This seems like an amazing idea and a terrible idea all wrapped into one. 

Imagine a battlefield lit from space. No more fumbling around in the dark. 

Also, imagine the collateral light pollution, and how this will further restrict our view of nighttime skies.

SpaceX says a leak in-flight has caused Starship to lose attitude control. The spacecraft is in a suborbital spin and likely will have an uncontrolled reentry over the Indian Ocean. This follows other mission setbacks — loss of booster during return and failure of payload doors to open. SpaceX

just got back from checking out the northern lights. i can see them without the camera tonight. the phone did take some nice pictures that really made it pop.
