Sporting News: Petteway #2 SF in the Nation

In his fourth game for the Huskers, Petteway scored 30 points against Massachusetts. It’s not like a lot of people noticed, though, because he was playing for Nebraska against UMass. That’s not a headline-grabber. When he scored 35 in late January against Minnesota, that was nice, but it came after the Huskers opened Big Ten play with five losses in their first six games. Which seemed like no surprise.

And then came February, and it wasn’t long before people were talking about whether Petteway might be the Big Ten player of the year. What changed? He changed, a little, and his impact changed a bunch. The Huskers started to win conference games and eventually reached their first NCAA Tournament in half a generation. Petteway was at the center of that, and this time he’ll be expected to make the Huskers a consistent winner, not just one that squeezed into the back of the tournament field.

Better shot selection. More aggressive to the hole and less erratic jumpers. Smarter on defense. Fewer dumb fouls. I'd also like to see him set up his teammates a little more often. His coaches can scheme for some of these things and really help TP improve his overall game. I'm expecting him to have a target on his back this year and how he responds to the extra attention and opposing teams game planning will determine this teams success as well as his draft status.

anything else? lol JK. I agree with what you are saying though. He has plenty to work on, and if he can grow with the extra attention he is going to receive this year he will be very dangerous. I am almost as excited about the upcoming Basketball season as I am the upcoming Football season. Crazy!!

I know it seems like a lot to work on but like I said, his coaching staff can scheme a little better for him. Too many times he gets stuck with the ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock and he's 25ft from the hoop. If like to see Miles run him off some more off ball screens. Get him in some mismatches off those. His defensive fouls are a little lazy and beyond his caliber of player. Very easy to fix though.

Yeah one of the biggest things is he really needs to know when to press and when to take his time, like you said Caught to many times 25 ft from the bucket with no time left.

He needs to improve his body language after mistakes. A lot of times he would droop his head or draw attention to himself somehow. Nothing major, but I think he needs to make a mental leap more than a physical one at this point.

Boom! I'm not taking him in the draft. I don't know where he's slotted but I think he has proven that his allAround game is severely lacking. I just don't see him being anything more than a role player. He reminds me of Kenny Bell. Flashes of talent but hurts his team because of his unreliability. I'd take Shavon over TP any day. Smarter player. More consistent and unselfish.

^^ post of the day. Kid could benefit from another year of play here, and take a lesson from Shavon. It was interesting watch double-ot against Cincy. He fouled out, and it gave us a glimpse what playing next year could look like without Pettaway. We didn't light up the score board, but we got it done.

Of course, we have contributors coming up throughout our program.
