I did put down greed. It is a good point that there are costs associated with accomodating that many people for any event. Still, it would be nice, considering all that the fan base of this state does for the college, that free spring game admission would be sort of a "give back." I did appreciate it last year hearing that, after weather cancelled the game, people were allowed basically free concessions and that sort of thing. Nice touch.

In the end, my major objection to the spring game set up is the whole reserve seat nonsense. I love the idea of fans being able to show up two to three hours before the spring game and get an opportunity to sit in premium seats on the 50. Most of us won't ever sit there for an actual game. It's corner of the end zone and end zone for most of your average fans who get to see one or two games a season.

The overall health of the program

A testament to the devotion of Husker Fans.

I strongly believe, if tickets were free, we would see packed seats. I don't mind spending $10-15, so I don't see it as greed at all. We have always done it, for as long as I can remember. If they were to do a price increase, or just started it, then I would see it becoming a greed issue.

I love the fact that its a reserve seat, then you don't have fighting or need to split up because you can't get a group together. Thats what its all about right? Buy them early, and you can get those premium seats for the Spring Game. I am not rich, or have a lot of money, but every game I have gone to, I have never payed an extreme amount for, and I have never sat in the corners lol. The South Endzone is actually my preferred spot to sit during a game. Much more life there than anywhere else IMO.

Eighth grade or younger gets in free. Did not know that. So even if you think that 1/3 of the fans there are kids roughly 14 or younger, that's still a profit of half a million. And I think that $4 per person for concessions is low.

I think we should all just consider charging $10 for the Spring game as a way to afford Barney's $350,000 salary.

Overall health

I said it was a bad idea.

I don't necessarily believe it is a bad idea. I just think it should be free unless the money goes to charity. 90,000+ people pay a lot of money every year for 7 or more home games. I don't think it is too much to ask that people get 1 free day at the stadium. But it is clear that when over 2/3 of the place gets filled, people don't mind so more power to the university.

how much do you guys think it costs to operate the stadium on a game day. Take into account of public utilities and such. All the water and electricity flowing through. I would not be surprised if it was itemized out that the U didnt profit a fraction as much as we think they are off this event.

Electricity would be the big one. But I doubt it is as much as you might think. Those screens carry the bulk of the burden I'm sure. Running the lights is a drop in the bucket.

No idea how it costs, I just know that the athletic department isn't anywhere close to hurting financially.

Greed, admission should be free, but it's also a testament to the devotion of Husker fans.

Greed

There is no reason to charge for a spring game besides extra revenue. I put greed because there is no happy medium between "greed" and "bad idea, should be free." But hell, that extra money is all accumulated and the reason we get these expansions and added facilities. But im a business student so it's hard to not look at extra charges and fees and any other type of cost that business's charge as greed. UNL is a business just like everything else. It's a scrimmage for god's sake, why do you need 10 dollars per person?
Let me know what your stance is on the "greed" after you have either run a business or been in the business world for several years. There are so many expenses that go into putting on the practice for the public from the security, maintenance, utilities and on and on and on...

Edit-sorry for my post...Accountability hit the nail on the head with his post...

i would not be surprised if the stadium broke even on the ticket sales but made a killing on the concessions. similar to a movie theater.

I'm putting this here not because attendance is important, or because the Spring Game is anything noteworthy or meaningful, but because we have nothing else to talk about.

According to SB Nation, these are the top ten attendance figures for Spring Games so far. The biggest caveat to this list (aside from the fact that it doesn't mean anything) is that Alabama, who has led the nation or been top three since Saban got there, plays this Saturday.

That said, here's the list:

Team - ATT

Nebraska - 60,174

Kentucky - 50,831

Texas - 46,000

Texas A&M - 45,212

Georgia - 45,113

Ohio State - 37,643

South Carolina - 35,218

Louisville - 33,000

Clemson - 30,000

Oklahoma - 29,200

LINK

I suppose it's better to be at or near the top of this list than at the bottom. But even Texas Fan is saying that their figure is a lie in the comments of SB Nation's article.
Interesting link. No surprise we are #1! Surprised to see Kentucky #2. Surprised OU was not higher in numbers. Clicked on the link...Michigan low numbers and Stanford was pathetic!
