Spring Position Battles - Quarterback

LJS Spring Practice Questions

1. Can Tommy Armstrong make continued steps in playing, as offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf described it earlier this spring, “an efficient game?” The offensive coordinator said “He's got to be able to make the throws we want him to make and not do too much.” We’ll refrain from playing expert on Armstrong’s progress after a few practices open to the media. But it's also understood that the Spring Game, while being just one of 15 practices, has a way of shaping conversation for the next few months around here. Armstrong could use a particularly efficient, turnover-free day April 16.
5. Do we see Patrick O’Brien start to get worked in with the top units? Understand, that wouldn’t mean he’s going to the front of the quarterback race. But it could signal the next step for his chance to make a run for the backup role. Langsdorf has liked how O’Brien transitioned, but so far, the true freshman’s work has been with the lower units. “We're early, so we've got a long ways to go,” Langsdorf said after the first week, “but we've got to get him running with some of the better groups.”

TA needs to not lead the nation in INTs.

That's giving opponents too many opportunities to score points on a defense that isn't likely to be in the top 20/25

Why not have Bush change positions? He is 6'3" 220 lbs and runs like a deer. He will probably never take another snap at QB.
If everybody stays relatively healthy, I suspect you are right, but given that Darlington has been moved to WR and POB is still largely unproven, we don't have much depth at QB.

He feels like he's become somewhat of a forgotten commodity, even with Darlington making a position change. But, if POB ends up not being quite ready to play this fall and TO is the starter, Bush could very well be in a position to push Fyfe for the back-up spot. So, he isn't completely out of the running yet.

And unless I'm forgetting someone, if POB does redshirt this year AND Bush were to change positions, that QB depth becomes awfully thin.

We are thin at the QB spot in my view with only TA, Fyke, Bush and POB and a transfer guy (I forgoet name) coming in the fall I recall. At this point, we certainly can't be said to be loaded. We would hate to move Bush to Safety (assuming he is fast and quick enough which I doubt?) and then see Tommy get injured, leaving us with Fyke and a green probable redshirt candidate POB). We could have two QBs get hurt in the first game - it happens - and a third go down in week three. At that point, we are installing a back up safety as a back up QB. We should keep no less than 5 QBs on the roster all with the ability to run the offense at a basic (Matt Turman for example) level.

I think if we were thin at WR, he would be moved there. However, we are the farthest thing from being thin there.

So 4 deep at a position is thin?
