Spring Practice - Offensive Line

Gates went from right to left and did just fine. I'd imagine it'd be hard for Gaylord to be worse than Knevel or Conrad.

Gates was much better at RT. I'm hoping that mammoth juco LT we offered will sign so gates can go back to RT next year

I heard that as well, but it was probably just a few people's conjecture or a hopeful thought. Remember, this was thought of as a possibility when it was learned we were moving to the 3-4 defense. People were wondering if we had anyone on the roster to play that crucial zero technique.

Thats true. I also remember people were pretty excited when he signed here. He was the big get of the offense line class 2 years ago. Honestly I would rather he pan out on the O-line instead of getting switched to defense. We need a solid O-line with depth instead of placing a kid at NT for a year or two until we get "the right guy". It's pretty hard on a guys playing career if he can't settle in and play a specific position.

Riley was .... very careful .... about how he complimented the depth along the offensive line. It's right at the beginning of his presser if you want to go listen to the whole quote.

Riley added this: "Without being overly thoughtful about this probably, I would say we're on our way to having more depth in the offensive line of guys that can play in the game."

Not that the line couldn't play better but I think this was lacking last year as well, especially in the bowl game:

"We have all the makings of being able to protect the quarterback," Riley said. "And then the other fact of the matter is you have to protect the line with your scheme. You really have to be thoughtful about that."

How many times have we heard someone getting buried on the depth chart and switches from OL to DL --- and they never play once the season comes.

Langs said having 7 guys who can play with no drop off would be ideal. Says he thinks they're close to that.

Langsdorf likes center John Raridon’s blocking, but not his shotgun snaps.

“He’s got to work on his ’gun snaps,” Langsdorf said bluntly.

Center Michael Decker. Offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh demanded more from his sophomore class of linemen and Decker has stepped up and, for the time being, he’s No. 1 ahead of John Raridon. Guard Jalin Barnett looks like a better player, too.
