Successfully avoided a lot of spoilers, especially the big ones. Pretty happy with it overall.

I think when I end up rewatching these movies some day, I'll just skip from TFA to TROS. Unless someone can remind me of something I learned in TLJ that I need so I can watch this movie. Ren/Rey's Force bond, maybe?

Luke dying and the Force bond are pretty much the only major parts of TLJ that carry over. 

 
Luke and Leia's scene in TLJ is one of my favorite all-time Star Wars scenes, but that's probably more to do with Carrie Fisher than the characters.

-Rey and Ren Force Bond scenes

-Luke swatting Rey with the switch while force teaching

-Yoda force ghost

-Rey and Ren fighting Red Guards,  death of Snoke maybe.

-Luke "arriving" on Crait, scene with Leia

-Luke force projecting like a boss

-Luke death scene

Everything else is mostly throwaway which is unfortunate.  Under no circumstances is the casino story ark ever necessary.

I don't even remember why they had to go there. But the main problem is that character should never have been created. We already had 4 brand new characters that were intriguing (5 if you count BB-8). VII introduced them, VIII should have let us get to know them a lot better. Going to that planet probably would have been okay if it had been Finn and Poe, since it's a relationship people found interesting/fun. They could have made those 2 gay and it would have made a lot more sense than having a Finn fan-girl show up at random and accompany him. Or not made them gay. Either way, adding a brand new character when we had other new characters that were well-liked made no sense.

They were there to get a locksmith thief played by Benecio Del Torro of all people.  While the entire Resistance is running on fumes, Rose and Finn d!(k around freeing giraffe horse things on a casino world.  It was awful.

Correction, they were going to get the locksmith thief played by Justin Theroux, but got thrown into jail for incorrectly parking their ship and instead found someone with almost the exact same skill level to do the thing that they needed to do in the same jail cell played by Benecio Del Torro.

Part of a movie almost universally praised by critics for its plot.

Yes, that's true.  Del Torro was NOT in fact the locksmith they were there for, he was the one they ended up in jail with.  I did not go into this much detail over it because the entire story arc was pointless and made the movie drag on.  Part of a movie that was well done that is completely unessential to the plot of the film.  Go figure.

I think the similarities are more impactful than that, personally. Both movies share an almost identical plot line in less than 50 words: a marooned droid must deliver intelligence of galactic importance to a group of rebels fighting against an imperialistic nemesis. Meanwhile, a young 'nobody' begins to develop their skills in a mythical power known as the 'Force,' culminating in an epic battle to destroy a planet-killing military base.

Naturally, TFA tries to do quite a bit to separate itself after that point but the core of the movies are 100% identical. For the record, I really liked TFA. But, I will admit that as a fan of the series I was pretty disappointed in the core direction and had hoped for something a bit different.

That's one thing that I do give the prequels credit for. By and large, those core story lines were fairly standalone and unique in comparison to the original trilogy.

To add to that, the nobody is trapped on a desert planet and meets a grizzled mentor figure who dies 2/3rds of the way through to someone he shares a personal connection with. 

Also, Poe is more Han than Leia, and Finn doesn't have a comparison to the OT; that's partially why he's so underwritten, as Abrams has no one to match him to. 

 
Saw this for a 2nd time and a lot of the emotional beats hit me harder this time (probably because I read complete spoilers and I was dreading what was going to come next in the first viewing). Overall I just enjoyed it even more.

Still don't like the ending of Ben and Rey (should have just been a hug, not a kiss). Way better than TLJ because it feels like everyone involved is having fun. It knows what its doing and outside of some cringy lines (anything involving Rey being told she's a Palpatine where Palpatine is specifically mentioned), I liked how the story fit into the overall Saga.

Also I don't know why people are mad the Rey is actually a "somebody". Star Wars has always been about your choices (good or bad) being greater than wherever you come from or your bloodline. That is the heartbeat of the Saga. Anakin's choices in ROTS lead to his downfall. Luke's choices in ROTJ lead to Anakin's redemption. Rey's choice to not allow her being Palpatine's granddaughter affect her final decision (Kylo's choice to turn back to the light, Poe and Finn's choice to fight even though they did not know if they were going to receive backup).

Also Also, found families are greater than blood relatives when your blood relatives are Vader or Palpatine.

The fact that JJ cut Rose's character down to 1 minute of screen time could be viewed as kowtowing to the reddit/twitter idiots/racists whom chased her off of social media. Trying to think where she could be used more in the movie, and really the only place would be replacing her and Jannah for the ending. I just don't know if adding her to the trip would have changed dynamics or would have made a better movie.

I can see how someone would think that but I can't think of how it actually is a good opinion. Rose was a worthless and boring character addition, who went on a worthless and boring mission, and it would be more compelling to argue that she was added only to kowtow to the woke twitter left. I'm glad JJ more or less ignored her because her character never gave me anything.
