stats post for the week with an NU focus

Special Teams Player
I'm taking all the stats for nine categories from all the games played this season between FBS teams.  I'm calculating z-scores and turning them into percentiles for individual stats within those categories and then averaging all those to come up with rankings (based on the average percentile ranking for the stats within those categories).  No adjustment has been made for strength of schedule (SOS).

Let's start with all the Nebraska stats in these nine categories (with the number on the right being the percentile, relative to the national average for that statistic):

The average Nebraska ranking, for all the categories above, is effectively 10th (but, as you can see below, Minnesota gets the official nod for that slot).  I guess that says something about our offense, given how poor the defensive numbers are.  The season could have been even worse?

Here are the overall rankings for the B1G stats (based on the average of all the category averages):

1

Ohio State

87.67

2

Wisconsin

82.09

3

Penn State

81.17

4

Michigan

64.03

5

11

35.29

12

Maryland

29.73

13

Rutgers

25.54

14

Illinois

25.06

The number on the right is calculated by taking the average of all the averages for the individual categories.  In other words, I average all the stats I listed above for NU for each B1G team by category and then average those averages to get the overall ranking.  I'm almost certainly laboring the point now.  The average % I shared for NU up top was a straight percentage of all, regardless of category, in contrast to what I've done for the B1G rankings.

Here are the national rankings, per this method of averaging category averages, considering all games between FBS teams, and not adjusting for SOS:

We're consistent in that we've retained the 100th spot we were at ahead of the Penn State game.  I'm looking forward to the UCF-South Florida game this Friday.

Lastly, I figured I'd share the yards per carry given up by the Blackshirts going back to 2008 (because that's how far back cfbstats.com allows me to go and filter out games versus lower division teams):

2017     -     5.44

2016     -     4.44

2015     -     3.77

2014     -     4.82

2013     -     3.61

2012     -     4.96

2011     -     4.13

2010     -     3.90

2009     -     2.78

2008     -     3.67

Only six teams have posted a stat below 3 this season.  42 teams (including the aforementioned six) have posted a stat below 4.

Get well, Big Red!

Wow our defense is really bad! And our offense is really average except we would probably fair alot better if our strength was rushing instead of passing

The offensive stats, passing and scoring, are misleading. We have been getting most of our production against the oppositions 2nd and 3rd string after the game is out of hand. It is remarkably similar to Billy C's last year. The stats don't show it, but our offense is just as pathetic as our defense.

I was thinking the same.  I have generally been commenting on how our stats in the passing defense category have been inflated by how many teams choose to simply run on us but, with those both having bottomed out, the new head-scratcher is our having a "good" passing offense.  We have to do something with all those possessions after our opponents kick off.  p.s. - The other misleading stat is the one for 2015 rushing yards per carry.  Opponents chose to throw on the NU defense that season.
