Well some of already know but for those other's that don't.....I coach YMCA Football and have been coaching for 7 years. This season I took the plunge and head coached a team for the first time. The previous 6 years I helped out. The age groups that I coach are 3rd and 4th graders. I gotta tell you at how fast these kids learn!
At the beginning of the year I had them running the wishbone offense. It was simple and the blocking was easy. As the kids progressed and learned I had them running the split option. First off for those of you that coach kids at this age, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to find a 9 year old center who can snap in the shotgun. Well I found one and he was AMAZING! Second, running the option of any kind is REAL tough. This was at age 8 and 9 years old! The scarry thing was these kids soaked it up faster then the town wino who just bought his first bottle of Nigh Train for the day. Well we ended the season 5-2 and made it to the Superbowl playing a team that was 7-0. Now mind you this team has not lost a game in 4 years. They got a hell of a coach and man he has his kids well coached.
With the score being 0-0 late in the 4th I told one of my coaches that it was going to come down to who makes the mistake will inturn lose the game. We had their team backed up to their own 7 yard line. I knew the only pass play they tried was the roll out and their QB would hit the TE. Well I called TO and it was 3rd and 9. I told my CB that I had a feeling that they were going to roll to the right and either hit the TE or tuck it and run. I told him to line up in front of the WR and as soon as the ball was snapped to run as hard as you have ever ran before and get that QB and win the game for us! The kid smiled and said, "you got it coach!". I told my FS what we were doing and to cover the outside WR. The ball is snapped and my little CB ran the fastest I have ever seen him run before. He hit the QB and stripped the ball all in 1 motion. He had the smarts to get up and jump on the ball. BOOM TD and we WIN THE GAME! My entire team ran towards me and jumped on me knocking me to the ground. All 19 of my players were screaming "WE WON COACH WE DID IT!!!". I am 37 years old and I can count the number of times that my ole eyes have teared up and man this was one of those times! I was so proud of how these kids never gave up, fought their asses off and won the game. With that, the San Angelo Saints won the YMCA Central Light Weight Division Super Bowl with the score being 6-0! (PS I whispered to my wife as we were walking off the field, I think my blood pressure shot up 12 points after today)
