Attleboro, MA -- Children at the Willett Elementary School in Attleboro are not allowed to play tag, touch football or any games involving contact during recess.

Prinicpal Gaylene Heppe cited the safety risks and the school's liability in case of injury as reasons for the recess ban. Heppe, who is in her second year as principal, told CBS4 the ban is not new and has been in effect for years.

"I was surprised....I think they should be allowed to. I used to run and chase, play kickball, dodgeball, all that," said parent Colleen Bischoff.

Critics of the policy said it's just another way to micromanage kids.

"Kids will be kids, no matter what. Kids are going to trip on rocks, it happens," said one unidentified parent.

The Attleboro Sun Chronicle reports elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo. and Spokane, Wash. banned tag at recess this year. A suburban Charleston, S.C. school also outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

Principal Heppe said she isn't interested in any trends around the country, her concern lies with keeping the children as safe as possible.

This policy is not district wide. Each principal has the power to enforce it at their discretion.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

 

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

 

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

 

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

 

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

I suppose they can't play catch with any type of ball in fear of jamming a finger. Probally can't jump rope either in fear of spraining an ankle or twisting a knee. What a f'n joke. And people wonder why kids are becoming obese.

 
Why don't we just outlaw sports, toys, jungle gyms, gym class, and anything else that could be remotely fun.

When I saw the title I thought it was the Tag body spray (pee-yoo). :lol:

If they didn't do this the first time the kid breaks something or gets a bruise litigation will follow and then of course that debate starts. Costs tax dollars to defend schools, schools get so little as it is.

 
I think it is just sad!!! It is sad that kids can't be kids anymore and it is even worse that parents and other people are just so damn sue happy these days! Always looking for ANYTHING to sue over!!

 
Maybe we should just take all of the kids and put them in bubbles that way we won't have to worry about anything happening to 'em!!!! This world is going to turn into a bunch of cry babies that complain about everything and sue everyone constantly!!!! :wacko:

 
The school I work in has looked into doing different games/activities out on the playground. As a Phy. Ed teacher I am very against taking away activities that actually give the kids some exercise besides in my classes. Parents are very sue happy and too protective of kids. It all comes down to the supervision and not the kids. If you allow one kid to push someone down, then of course others are going to do it. Let the kids be kids and get a little dirty.

 
If you are scared for your kids safety and do not want tag or touch football or other activities that have some contact, try HOME SCHOOLING let these kids enjoy their childhood.

Damn people are such a bunch of PUSSIES these days.
