Eric the Red mentioned watching Harrahs last night, so I thought that this would be appropriate. Rob Zatcheka (sp?) mentioned that in 94, NU had no better than the 2nd or 3rd most talent in the BIG 8, yet still won the NC due to intangibles. He said that CU certainly had more talent, and I am assuming that he was making mention that KSt was as talented as NU was that year.

And has Mack Brown has proven, top 5 recruiting classes dont neccessarily equate to Big12 Championships, let alone National Championships.

Something to ponder.....

 
Yep, TO never had any brilliant recruiting class in his title runs in the mid 90's. Hopefully Cally is able to get every last drop of talent squeezed out of this and future recruiting classes.

 
Well rest assured if Cally cant coach (which i dont believe) then we will have awesome athletes for the next coach. :lol:

but it is true great players alone dont make championships, look at the yankees. It takes chemistry like NE Pats built. People taking salary cuts making sacrifices to win. It is awesome to have blue chips but those chippers have to let go of their pride and egos and play like a team. I think this will happen at NU. :thumbs

I'd say theu were behind CU. Theuy had a ton of NFL guys on that team

 
I think both teams had lots of talent on them. NU had a lot of good players that played with a chip on their shoulder all year because of the way the 93 season ended. The team was unified, talented and motivated. One hell of a combination.

Or as Pete Carrol, Nick Saben, and Bob Stoops have proven they help win Pac 10, SEC, Big 12, and National Championships. I figured Nebraska fans of all people would be kind to Mack Brown not being able to win the big game.(sounds familiar huh?)

I want to know how many more people CU had on that team that went to NFL then the Big Red had that year. I don't think it would be more then 1 or 2. I thought Rob Z. was selling the talent of the 94 team short when he made that statement last night.

Anyway I can't ever watch that show all the way though I usually turn off the TV because it sucks so bad.

Yeah, it does, well at least Fat Travis sucks, but I think that RZ is pretty good. :thumbs

If you count the backups, NU had alot of those guys play in the NFL. Off the top of my head, starters only that played in the NFL: Offense-LP, Stai, Weigert, Graham, RZ, Schlessinger. Defense: D Jones, C Peter, Miles, T Williams, Veland, Dumas, Colman, and you may want to count Minter (even though he was hurt).

CU-had alot of very good players, but Im not gonna go back and look it up at this point ;)

RZ also mentioned on the recruiting wrap-up show on Feb 2 that when he was watching the players warm up for the Bowl game against Mich State (can't remember the bowl?), that the starters probably wouldn't have even been backups on the 94, 95, and 97 teams. He was surprised at how far the talent had fallen and said BC was doing a great job getting kids in here like he played with.

This always strikes me as an idiotic argument for Husker fans because didn't it take the greatest coach ever (TO) awhile to win the big one and win the championship? Mack Brown is 2-5 in his first 7 years at Texas against Oklahoma. TO was 1-6 in his first 7 years.

Mack Brown has been putting a beating on NU since he took over. He took a crappy team (5-6) and in his first year went 9-3.

It wasn't Mack Brown who called one more play on 3rd down with a chance to go to overtime at home against arguably the best secondary in college with no timeouts left.

Mack Brown has the second longest bowl streak, second best winning percentage in the last 9 years and the second most consecutive winning seasons in the NCAA. Not to mention he went 11-1 last year and won the Rose Bowl!

If anything you can make a better argument that NU will be more successful by looking at what Mack has done with his talent at Texas. If a crappy coach can go 11-1, why can't NU do the same or better?

Very well put Gimp, I'd like to be a BCS team disappointed in the 1 loss than anything we've been the past few years. Mack Brown had a better team last year than any Frank or BC have had, and don't give me the crap about NU playing in the title game in 01, because I'm as die-hard Huskers as anybody and even I don't think we belonged in that game.

 
This is great that Gimp spoke up on this issue, because I have had thoughts on it, too. To say that Mac Brown has been a failure at Texas is crazy. His record speaks for itself with or without his great talent. You still have to be a pretty decent coach to have that record. There's no reason not to believe he can start winning more big games. He is under-appreciated by many Texas fans. Kind of like another coach who was under-appreciated in the '70s and '80s.
