Targeting vs. Clean Hits

With all of the rule changes occurring, will we see games that are altered by a tone-setting tackle or hit anymore? It's become a bit of a ticky-tacky situation for defensive players who have to avoid the head or neck area of offensive players and pull up at the last moment of impact. However, does this mean the days of a John Ruud hit against Oklahoma won't ever happen? Or just the chances of it have become slim to none?

Not anymore! The rules are set up to protect players...maybe a little too much.

However, because of the rules, there will be games decided by the ref throwing a flag on a hard hit. The SEC had an article about the area from the shoulders to the knees that can be contacted...

I hope Castille's hit would still go without a pentalty today, unless a ref got flag happy. That's pretty clean imho... shoulder to chest, with a lot of force behind it.

I, however, do agree with the overall idea that we should better protect players, especially trying to limit contact with the head and neck areas. One analogy I like to make is with an armed soldier. Being a rifleman is an inherently dangerous job, but, that doesn't stop people from coming up with better weapons, protective gear and strategies. Just because something is inherently dangerous doesn't mean we can't try to make it safer.

But, in some cases, I think it's hurting the game. It's almost reached a point where instant replay should take a look at some of the "unnecessary" hits in the game. Referees can review "illegal" hits to see if an ejection is needed, but, the penalty always sticks. That's not right to me. There were a few "illegal" hit reviews I saw last year that, after watching it on replay, I believed didn't even warrant the penalty. But, I doubt they'll ever change that.

In 2013 college football teams were penalized 15 yards when assessed a targeting penalty, even if that penalty was overturned on review. In 2014, teams won't have to worry about those 15 yards if the call is reversed.

According to ESPN's Brett McMurphy, the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a change to the rule Thursday so teams won't be penalized 15 yards when a targeting call is overturned upon review.

Last month the NCAA Football Rules Committee recommended the rule change, which awaited approval from the Oversight Panel.

I believe this rule will be better called this year. Seemed like it was inconsistent throughout all the conferences. SEC, they didn't call it much, from what I noticed.

A couple of concussions per one game .... you know, knockouts (unconscious). I'm surprised no helmet gear.

Believe it or not, women's Aussie football league. The only difference, small football size and rough tackling not allowed.

Well finally GOOD NEWS ! However, I'm wary about "awaited approval". Probably next decade. 2020 rule changes: tackling is strictly not allowed ... only two hands touch. And blocking zone will be above the hips and below the nipples.

Are you kidding me about Aussie Rules Football? Do you even watch it? The game has undergone huge changes to better protect players and prevent/discourage high, dangerous hits. So much so that there's a large backlash about the game essentially being pussified...sound familiar to the football most Amercians know? Thought so.

Edit - And most games do NOT have significant injuries like that. I take it back, it's pretty clear you don't even follow the sport. Carry on.

I watched it religiously until ESPN drop the coverage (15 years ago or more). I didn't know huge rule changes.

However you noticed youtube title? (previous post) .... Modern Era. I researched WB vs. Hawthorne date under this youtube segment .... 2009.

The more I think about the targeting rule the more I hate it. Did anyone think about the defender. When targeting is called with inadvertent helmet to helmet contact, the defenders are forced to go low. I watched a HS player get knocked out last night by a blow to the head from the running back's knee.

Don't think that is the major issue with the change of the rule because u can get knocked out for going high too. I think u will see more knee injuries to wrs by making the defense go low on them.

The game for all of its reviews, and unnecessary rules changes, is worse today than ever. Also the statisticians, and announcers used to have to research some useful info for the time right after the TD. Not now! They just go straight to 8 commercials. And if you are lucky youget back in time to see the kickoff. I can see a time coming when they return from commercials after the first down play, such as how NBC was handling beach volleyball during the olympics. Youd miss the first four or five points coming out of commercial. I think the only way to be heard on this is just not to watch.
