Texas to Pay Athletes $10,000 Stipend

Lost in the hubbub of media days and North Carolina investigations was a report on Tuesday night from the Dallas Morning News stating that Texas plans on playing their athletes a $10,000 stipend to cover cost of attendance and the usage of their likeness:


First and foremost, this is a good thing that Texas is doing. I’ll avoid the rant today, but if you’ve read my work over the last few years, you know that I am firmly in the corner of paying college athletes.

But the other part of this is that it’s not necessarily something that is going to become a trend, at least not right away. Texas is the richest athletic department in the country. They can afford to do this more than any other program in the country. Only time will tell if it’s something that catches on elsewhere.

Half goes to offset expenses not covered by scholarship and half is a payment to use their likeness which was a provision in the Ed O'Bannon case.

And this goes for ALL Texas athletes. They all get the same amount regardless of sport. The total amount will be close to $6 million per year

 
According to this article, 20 programs made a profit last year. It's quite possible that Texas has more athletes than many schools do but if you subtract $6M, only 11 would make a profit.

I don't think letting every school choose their own amount will be good for the vast majority of schools. I would think conferences should at least set a standard if not the Power 5.

WOW... This will be the new arms race. New stadium? meh dime a dozen. Top of the line weight room, training table, sports med... What is this Colorado school of mines? Yeah I want all that, a scolly and up the street just gave me 20k, whats your offer... The "Student Athlete" will be no longer in a few years....

 
Yeah okay this is all about recruiting. Luring athletes in with money. This is why I have NEVER even slightly agreed athletes should be paid to play college.

Also wouldn't you think title 9 is going to start getting sticky. I'm assuming Texas means pay all athletes 10k... They better hope the return on football money can cover all the other sports that are in the red.

You are correct all athletes get the 10K.
