In 1998, in order to protect/build confidence in the new BCS, the powers that be decided that K-State should not make it to the BCS-NC. Officials zapped players in the KSU/A&M and UT/MSU games with an EPMP death ray causing fumbles that decided the final scores and sent FSU, rather than KSU, to the National Championship.
Reports are that BCS officials have refined the device and added a "reverse" function to force the ball into the hands of certain players. NCAA officials are investigating such a reverse EPMP ray, thought to have been used in the 2011 Wisconsin/Michigan State and Wisconsin/Ohio State games, to force touchdowns on hail mary throws to prevent the Badgers from going to the National Championship.
