You can either sort of just "ignore" the ramblings, which is more of what JB does or you can try to explain it away, like DT appears to be doing.  But all he really does is make it seem worse not better, because it just seems like even MORE mushy rambling, which it clearly is.

Both are pretty normal ways to defend that type of situation.  The 3rd is to make fun of it "Ugggg my mind is turning into mashed potatoes" which clearly neither can do.

The 4th is the sad one, where you sort of just admit that you are not doing as well as you once were.  When you see that one, you can see the look on the persons face and it is crushing.

If you have aging parents/friends with memory issues, more than likely you have seen one of these four.  They are all sad to witness.

I've never known an old person who actually thinks their mind is going, which is crazy because everyone knows that it happens to most old people. There are some rare exceptions like Betty White where they are super sharp into their 90s. I think most people just aren't self aware though, so they think they're the Betty White kind of old person.

I knew one guy, personally, and he knew his mind was going and he would get sooooo mad, it just destroyed him, he would get so angry about it, which I totally get it.

This is everyone with early stage dementia/ Alzheimer’s/ LBD which is a lot of people.   It’s very very very sad to see progress to the point they don’t realize what’s happening to their mind and they are a different person mentally.
