The Future Begins Now

There’s a great big mountain in the State of Nebraska.

Most anyone under the age of twenty did not directly experience the Husker Glory Days. They know it  through family, friends, or videos, but that’s it. Recruits around the country only know what they’ve seen from Nebraska in the last fifteen years or so. And we know what that picture looks like.

Paul Finebaum has a big pulpit on ESPN. He and his guests on Tuesday discussed the current condition of the Huskers and it was not pretty. The now-former Nebraska AD gave a pathetic series of answers during this segment. And that is what people are seeing out on the air nationally these days - Nebraska as a sad and confused sack.

The new Husker Pooh-Bah has lots of work to do. High on the list must be thinking about outside-the-box things they could do to stand out once again. A new coach alone is not enough to compete off the field with the likes of four Big Ten Blue Bloods who already have top generals and basic things to offer as Nebraska has. Apologies and sad faces from high places will not get it done. And there are lots of people making really big money off the Husker program.

The biggest mountain in Nebraska is in Lincoln. Take plenty of trail mix. And don’t let anyone tell you there are no high mountains in Nebraska.

Before we all get "back to the future' , we have got to live through the present.  Not going to be easy watching the team fail every Saturday.  We will not be rebuilding any more.  It will resurrection time now.   There are far too many 'happy' posters on this board right now.  Firing the AD and many hoping the HC too is NOT good news no matter how you think about.  We really needed this Riley experiment to work.   As I have pointed out in another discussion recently, it will take a good decade to get us back where we want to be with a long, sustained and relentless effort by lots of people.

The Riley has not worked for whatever reasons on the field, although just 3 weeks ago today, there was a real sense of optimism that we might (just might) be on the right track, FINALLY, after all these years.   But like Robinson Crusoe found, as he traversed the island in search of civilization and a future, the realization that we are in this alone is a very sobering and challenging one.   

Was this Riley era our last chance at redemption and resurrection?    I'd like to not think so but, there is one thing for sure, the next head coach has got to absolutely be THE RIGHT STUFF.  There are no sixth chances in life, except cats who get 9.   The way things are going, we won't get another 20 years before football is banned altogether.

I agree with this.  Nebraska didn't retire a great group of championship Seniors last year and have to rebuild the roster over the next couple years.  Nebraska's last group of championship seniors probably have kids that will graduate high school this year....

Notre Dame and Texas have been going through the same thing......finding the right coach and changing the culture is never easy......if you are going to hire on track record of wins, losses and coaching success, Riley was far, far from being the best choice, but that was SE's pick, so you start with his termination and go from there.

People these days, especially kids, have very short memories.  If you have the right Culture, Accountability, Leadership & Team, you will have success.  And success breeds more success.  

The recruits can feel the energy when they are in  Lincoln.  They will come again once the right Leadership is in place.  And Penn St, Washington and many other programs show that it doesn't take long to be back in the Top 10 and to be prominent once again.

The toxicity (SE) is being sucked out of Lincoln and the best of energy is starting to be pumped back in.

Unless u get the right coach.  Seems to be working for penn st. Didnt seem to take long to get back to the top. 

Penn State was never down like NU as the cupboard was never nearly as bare.   Penn State got probation, which was subsequently relaxed considerably, and of course lost maybe the equivalent of one recruiting class essentially.   We have gone through a generation of mediocrity in recruiting and on field results.  No titles or trophies of substance since about the time most current players were born.   We were overrated several times along the way but really what is our best win since 1997?   What is our best final poll ranking in the memory of any of our current players or recruits of the future?

We all live on those 1990s highlight videos and so on but seriously, we have not been truly relevant in the national title since Tom retired.  The 2001 Rose bowl was embarrassing (I was there to witness it - they ran out of beer before the second quarter and NU fans needed a bunch to suffer through that one).   The drain plug was pulled about 1999, whether knowlingly or not, and the water that floated the Husker's ship was draining and we've been paddling around in a few inches of muddy water for so long its hard to really remember the details.  Different captains of the same leaky boat.  

It will not be simple nor quick and it really is going to raise the titanic in many ways.   Unless miracles happen starting today, the next recruiting class is likely lost and we better get a splash hire who can hit the ground sprinting or the 2018 class will not be much relief.  It will then take 3 years more assuming we have magical results because there are plenty more games lost before the wins start coming in the mean time.   I know this is a dire forecast but the damage done by firing coaches and starting over cannot be under estimated.
