The inside story of a toxic culture at Maryland football

s#!t like this is just confusing to me. The University is a thing, not a person. It doesn't have it's own agency or consciousness. Who are the people who were culpable?

And apparently the president and AD didn't even want to bring him back, but were overruled:

"The board of regents insisted that DJ return, and this has been their highest priority," a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN. "Some regents appeared to be obsessed with it. The problem is they don't have the authority to hire and fire DJ, but they made it clear that is their main priority here. Because they can't hire and fire anybody, which they finally realized, they told Wallace Loh that they wanted him to bring DJ back, and the clear message was that if Loh was not willing to bring DJ back right away they would fire [Loh] immediately and then see who the acting president was and get that person to [retain Durkin]."

Wonder if anybody is having second thoughts about letting Maryland into the Big Ten right about now. And if there's any Maryland recruits worth going after. (Edit: Maryland's class is currently 2nd from the bottom in the Big Ten, with only 10 commits, all 3*. I don't imagine it will be going up much - and this gives other teams some huge ammunition to use against Maryland in recruiting.)

I guess Loh could fire Durkin and then retire early (planning to retire in June) but it sounds like the BOR is determined to keep Durkin so they’d just get the next president to hire him back.

At this point they should have held off till the end of the season. Their season is going relatively well. It will be interesting to see if it tanks. Crazy how the reinstatement was handled
