The Mystery Coach Revealed!

Make or break now boys and girls...now we find out if Bo is a head coach or a just a damn good D coordinator I guess

While I'll admit these hires don't have the "wow" factor, I've seen enough of Bo's genius on the defensive side of the ball with "no-name" position coaches to trust him in hiring the right people to fix the offense. Our offensive problems the past two years are not Bo's fault (other than failing to address the problem, which he has now done) and I trust his ability to coach and to turn a football team around. Given the miracle he worked on defense in only one year, I'm taking the wait-and-see approach on these offensive hirings. He isn't stupid, and while we might not be able to pull the hottest assistants from other schools, we could surely hire someone with a more impressive history than Fisher, for instance. This tells me that Bo believes these guys are the best for the job.

I'm sure he has upside but I wonder how he ended up in golf and at a HS. The past looks OK but if you ask me he was heading the wrong way. Perhaps he has some cool story I don't know and I love what he did at the HS, to be hones it shows he can develop kids and this is lacking in spades on the ofense side of the ball.

Based on what we have heard about the coaching staff, as far as strong sources and so on, is it safe to speculate this will be the staff???

HC: Bo Pelini

OC/QB: Tim Beck

DC/DL: Carl Pelini

RB: Richard Fisher

WR/TE/RC: Ron Brown

AHC/OL: Barney Cotton

OL: Jon Garrison

DE/ST: John Papuchis (maybe DL Coach???)

LB: Ross Els

DB: Corey Raymond

GA: Ross Watsn

GA: Curt Baldus

Beck, Papuchis, and Raymond being the top recruiters, I guess??? Any thoughts?
Els will have ST, JP will be RC. Joe Ganz will be a GA coaching the QB's.

I stated yesterday that most people wouldn't be excited about the Offensive hires but I think they fill a need and will be solid.

Beck won't be coaching QBs?

Ganz really is going to be (effectively) QBs coach?

Oh boy...
Beck will be OC/QB's and Ganz will assist. Don't sell Ganz short though. He's going to be an assistant somewhere very soon. Very smart player/coach and understands reading defenses.

Will probably be a presser Friday or Monday.

No, it seems like Garrison is going to be part of the full on staff. Of course - could be wrong.

Time to root for the (probable) staff, but at this juncture it seems like we have replaced Shawn Watson and Ted Gilmore with Jon Garrison and Richard Fisher. I have a hard time getting around to a point where I see this as a positive.

The bottom line, I guess: if Bo prefers working with the staff, it isn't likely that keeping the older staff would be a better option.
Simply addition by subtraction. I am skeptical of these moves as well as keeping Barney on the field. Hopefully Bo knows offense as well as he does defense.

I certainly hope that JP, TB, or the "better" recruiters are NOT the RC. We need to have our better recruiters with their feet on the ground when in comes to recruiting, not doing administrative duties.

I hate the RC choice too, but the thoughts are maybe he'll push others to be better. Or so I'm told.

Ya, we've stocked-up on friends of Bo and Carl. It's his staff now, maybe should've been to begin with but it's definitely now. I admit I'm underwhelmed by the hires but we won't know what kind of hires were made til we've played. This is hands-down Bo's team now. His recruits and his staff. It's put-up or shut-up time. Hopefully it's put-up.

so far it looks like an uninspiring bunch of new hires, either we didn't have the money to attract proven coaching or we just couldn't get proven guys to come here....it may turn out well, but then so may the situation in Egypt...

I see your point. And I am not typically one to place much emphasis on early impression... but based upon what McCartney said about Rich Fisher and in viewing how well he did at the last level.. hey, in an intriguing way I'm thinking this guy could be a good hire. Who knows? I hope he will be. Certainly he cannot be faulted in this manner --- whereever he has been he has prospered and people think the world of him.

So... Welcome coach Fisher to the Big Red --- we wish you the best.

Yeah...I think we're all hoping he's similar to a Gus Malzahn. Coach in high school to great college offensive mind to head coach in what. . like 5 years. It probably won't happen like that but I think this guy will be a good complement to the staff. Looks like he's not afraid to work hard and is blue collar. The entire staff is really built that way now.

Joe Moglia was out of football for decades and after two years as an assistant got a head coaching job for the Nighthawks. Bo would have been crucified for putting Moglia on staff as a paid assistant in '08. Now it wouldn't look bad.

Fisher hasn't been out of football that long. Coached collegiately until 2002, then turned that high school around the last couple years. It's not a HUGE stretch, but is a stretch.

Then again, I remember asking who the hell are Mike Ekeler and John Papuchis? They turned out alright.

I will say, if Bo took this long to assemble his staff, it better be good.

Excellent point - shouldn't be overlooked. Lead by example. If our coaches carry themselves this way (as opposed to Callahans more laid-back Cali type) - then the players will feed off that.
