The Omaha Paper Can't Understand Why Martinez Doesn't Open Up To Them

Well, that first throw, for example, it was on Taylor. He made a bad throw. It was late, it was off target. He has to throw those outs so that only his guy can get them. It isn't a trivial throw. All Taylor needs to say is, "I made a bad throw, and the CB made a great play. Just gotta move on." He said half of that, just like when he was asked about the team's miscues, he talked about half of them. The penalties he wasn't a part of, and not the turnovers he was.

I know the counter argument will be, those standards are too high, or it doesn't matter. That's fine, but the following I would disagree with:

Taylor clearly knows how to handle the media very, very well.

You know what the amazing thing about this thread is that you can get a completely different slant depending on which board you go to. This board tends to think that TM is being picked on a little by the paper. Which I tend to agree with. Go to bighuskerfan and they all think TM is a complete is a complete jerk. They generally have 4-5 very vocal negative people. Then go to huskermax and you have something inbetween.

Well...the team talks about accountability all season and your starting QB doesn't take any accountability for his interceptions and fumbles. Hmmmm........

Not to bag on Taylor, just pointing that out....

Some guys there have some "inside" info. from trusted sources that have started to make me question the accountability on this Husker team. I hope most of the reports aren't true....

It actually really pisses me off....yet I am not letting it get to me too much because the reports could be false.

And plenty of them rip on Martinez...which is sad because I think he is doing a solid job this year...the defense needs to play better first and foremost.

Or I probably should have put it this way: Taylor handles the media very well in a way that allows him to get through direct Q & A's. In other words, by keeping it simple (almost frustratingly simple for some of you, apparently) he can side step any given topic. That works to his advantage, and it doesn't open a can of worms not worth opening.

Personally, I don't think the players or Bo owe me any lip service. I don't deserve an explanation or apology. But the counter to that will be, "I pay for season tickets, so I pay his salary/make their scholarships feasible, etc." I'm not trying to sound harsh, but if you don't like it, don't buy the tickets.

To quote Bo himself, "You watched the game." I watched it. I saw what happened. What matters is what happens during the 60 minutes of football on the turf. And it's generally pretty obvious to us what's happening to cause poor performances, etc.

Taylor was standoffish with the media back when he was a freshman Heisman trophy candidate being showered with love.

He clearly doesn't like public speaking, and honestly most people don't like being put behind a microphone either, even in the best of times.

Most of us also don't need our sports heroes to be charming, but it's kinda nice when they are.

I'll judge Taylor on the field, and accept the reports that the players respect his leadership and protect his right to be media shy. But the article is probably correct that Taylor could make it easier on himself with just a little effort and change of attitude. It would help Taylor more than it would help the World Herald, which sells papers either way.

There are people with "inside" info right here on HuskerBoard. And I can tell you that the "inside" info you pay for on Rivals isn't "inside" at all - at least, it's not any more "inside" than what you can get here, or any other forum with a guy who knows a guy. There, you're just paying for it.

I wonder if people would think the stuff they get from HuskerBoard would be better if they paid for it. I think some would. But it would be the same insight you'd get everywhere else.

We just happen to have cooler members than anywhere else.

Regarding BigHuskerFan... I'm a member over there, too. Don't post much, because the over-the-top Martinez hate just galls me. They think a certain brash young reporter from the Omaha paper is the bee's knees, which is nice I suppose, but it tells you something about the slant they have on the current team, the players and the coach(es).

The thing about that is...you don't know who is who. Some people know some things, some people get lucky, some people talk out of their *sses. But the same person can really be all 3 at any given time.

This is why there are message boards. For people to speculate on the speculation.

The Rivals service people pay for are articles (I guess the OWH and others are starting to get to a similar model), not the "inside info" which is often shared. I guess they also have a pay-only forum, which is something we'll never do here.

While Tim and jaw over there are fairly well-connected, you often hear different things from people who are equally strongly, or more, well connected, but with perhaps different people. The best thing I can draw from that is, take what you hear, anywhere, with a grain of salt. There are always divergent opinions and different takes on perhaps the same information. Different people draw different conclusions based on what they have heard.

Now, where what ever you say can be read everywhere in under 5 minutes, writers need to exercise a little more caution before making themselves look like dumbasses...

There is one poster on bighuskerfan who really does seem to have an inside track on a lot of information. He is always very possitive about the team never posts anything negative. Knappic I am with you I a rarely post on bighuskerfan. The whole site is just a bunch of real negative guys.

To me when guys or gals are that completely negative it just doesn't make sense. It's almost like they are throwing at temper tantrum because the arn't getting their way. "I want my team to be great and I am going to hold my breath until you make it happen mommy.

Taylor is extremely shy and isn't well-spoken.

I can relate.

I've said time and time again that his handling of the media isn't some calculated measure by him to cover things up or anything like that. It's because he's shy and would rather be doing anything in the world than talking to people who are going to dissect every single word and publish it for all to see.

And that doesn't mean he can't be a good leader either. As long as the guys wearing the red jerseys respect Taylor, he can be a good leader. Media has nothing to do with that.

The thing about connections... There are 120 guys in that locker room. There are 10 coaches, half a dozen more volunteers and PAs, umpteen guys in HuskerVision, another umpteen guys in the equipment room, trainers, front-office personnel, Athletic Dept staffers, etc. Each of these people has family, each of them have friends, each has a significant other or girlfriend or wife (or both), and all it takes is one Chatty Cathy in the bunch (and believe me, there's more than one) for us to get an "inside source."

Only problem is, each of them have a different opinion on what's going on with the team. Each can see the exact same situation and call it something different than the guy next to them. So even inside sources have to be taken with a grain of salt.
