The Onside

I am firmly in Bo's corner as far as what he has done with the program. But that onside kick was the worst decision that he has made as a coach. 3 minutes to go with two timeouts and he goes for one of the lowest percentage plays in football. The field position which we have lacked all game could have been swung to help us and it cost NU any chance of tying this game. A lot of questions have arisen from this game, however this one hurt SO BAD.

It was a horrible call. With 3 minutes to go you have the ability to give up one first down and still stop the clock any maybe get it back. You force them to change the way the call plays. It really doesn't matter when you have a DB try to tackle with his should and not wrap up. I witnessed on 3 different times, when Thenarse didn't wrap up and big plays were the result.
Who really thinks our offense had a chance with 2:00 left and no timeouts? They managed 2 field goals all day, and one of those was aided by 30 yards in Texas personal fouls IIRC. The only real chance this team had was to get the onside kick.
Texas got the ball at their own 42 yard line. One big run a couple of plays later and Texas is running out the clock.

I am not mad at Bo at all whatsover but just as was stated above I respectfully disagree with the decision.

The call was made because Bo had no faith in the offenses ability to drive the field with 2 minutes left and no timeouts, it was the right call.

Up to that point, our offense led by Shawn Watson with Pelini at the helm had played 117 minutes against Will Muschamp (including last years CCG) and had managed all of 6 field goals in that time. Bo figured our only chance was to get the ball and have 3 minutes and 2 timeouts.

They only needed one first down. What difference does it make where it happened on the field? They got the first down. Game over.

We're not arguing the outcome only the decision. Had they got the stop they would've punted into the endzone or rugby punted to our 3 yard line. Had we got the onside kick our offense still had to move the ball 45 yards. Still say the best bet was for a Defensive turnover on their end of the field or a big punt return.

I respectfully disagree with that call, even if we would have gotten the ball back I would still disagree with it. You have little chance of gaining what you want, GREAT chance of losing everything, whereas kicking it deep you have a good chance of getting at least some of what you want for a chance to tie or lead.
Agreed. Btw, does anyone have reports from Bo on this particular call yet? I'd love to hear his reasoning.

I just saw this. This was an awful knee-jerk decision by the coaches. It took away our momentum, for one thing. You don't risk that. We are down 7, with 3 minutes to go, with one of the best D's in the nation. Kick it downfield with Adi Kunalic, get the crowd pumped up with a touchback and some good defensive plays, then get the ball back to our offense ready to go.

The TO was wasted by Zac, but two timeouts and 3 minutes, I'll take the changes with our defense stopping the Longhorns cold.

Won't get into it too much more for now but from every angle this was an awful call. We come out flat after it (predictably) doesn't work, and that was that.

So was rushing the offense's tempo with what, 10-11 minutes to go and down just two scores. You don't get back in games by panicking. You claw your way and work your way back methodically, with the help of the occasional big break. Hagg's a hoss, by the way.

I have not read any previous post on this topic and am about to give an opinion and apologize now if it reiterates something already stated. To me an onside kick is something to try if you have 0 chance of getting the ball back legitimately, for say under a minute 1 t.o. under 2 minutes 0 t.o. But with 3 minutes and 2 t.o. you have to kick it deep with our defense and allow some crowd noise to be a fact. Either way you give up a 1st down it over, so why not take the field position. Had we stopped them 3 and out we'd a got the ball back so 1:45, no timeouts and 80+ yards to travel or kick it deep and have the same situation with 50-60 yard to go. Now, the only thing i see is Bo has seen this onside kick enuff from Alex he knew he could get it done. Alex looked like he knew what he was doing and it was a very VERY good kick, just 4 yards too deep. We know the result of one decision to its easy to speculate the other. Just another coulda woulda shoulda in the Texas series.

I agree with all of this but when they tried to run an up tempo offense. IMO it wasn't because they were panicking at all. We were down two scores and the D wasn't getting three and outs. This was one of the few good calls by Watson in this game. What I didn't agree with is you run an up Tempo offense with a passing QB and run the ball up the middle and run the zone read Crazy.

They got the first down so why even bother thinking about shoulda woulda coulda. I thought it was the right move. We couldn't stop them with 8 guys in the box. Let's worry more about recievers and missed tackles.

Personally, I like the call. As someone who is going to be a coach for living, I am making the same call in that situation. However, we should not have been put in that situation. If we don't oh-so characteristically burn a timeout, then we kick it deep with 3 timeouts and it's a different ball game. In all honesty though, doesn't really matter. We played a sloppy, emotionless, careless, lethargic football game and it was all around...from the first offensive series when Roy coughed it up. Have to hold on to the football. Have to, plain and simple. We're lucky enough to only have 1 loss this season after spilling the ball as much as we have....we've gotten some nice Sunday hops. Thought Watson didn't call a great game. Texas has talented and athletic defensive ends, the best we'll see until OU....should run between the tackles a little more. But again, sloppy game, poor effort. I expect us to bounce back this week.

I agree...don't kick the onside. Chances of converting, slim. We needed to stop them either way, so field goal wasn't likely, however it does two things. It puts them in 4 down territory, or it gives them a nice short punt to pin us deep.

Either way, I think we deserved to lose this game. We played terrible.
