The Predictions are Coming Out

The Experts are trying to cover their asses after last years' KSU/NU meltdown in the North.......I look for the Big Red and KSU to regain their footing and I fully expect the Tigers and the Clones to make a crash dive for the cellar ......The Wild Card team is CU...they have still got some bullets left in the gun and the coaches are solid

I like the Huskers to take advantage of the Home schedule and the fact that the Missouri Tigers are in a shambles to ride to the North Division Title....DON"T buy the preseason rags....we have as much info as they do...why pay for pure speculation...Hell, I'll give it to you for free.

i think CU is going to be tough too.....we will no doubt lose some games, but should gain back some respect and play competitively this fall....no reason not to be better than last year......

Really, I will not be surprised to see this team win 9+ games this year, and I will not be surprised to see them win 5 or 6. So many uncertainties, possibilities, and unknown factors are going to be present every game this year.

It's almost more confusing heading into this year than it was last year.

If there is one certainty in the North, it is that Pinkel is under HUGE scrutiny to get Smith more involved in what Smith does best...If he can utilize that similar to two years ago, they may be tough, esp. vs. us at home...otherwise, Pinkel better have a good retirement plan going on. I really don't see any other big time pressures in the Big 12 schools in the north:

NU- Cally would have to tank 8 games to see any shot at the door, and that WON'T happen, and it still wouldn't happen.

ISU- Too much promise and slow building to rock that boat

KU- See ISU

KSU- $ Billy OWNS that school. Nuff said. Also see PSU, sad state of.

CU- The Buffs won the North last year. That sad fact will save Gary for at least the next year.

So IMHO, it will be between NU, ISU, and CU, with Mizzou as a wild card, depending on which B.Smith is allowed to show up. Schedule definitely favors us.

Happy 4th everyone! Time to go start the grill! :cheers

CU is scary. There always going to play us tough. And with all there problems, at the very least it gives them something huge to play for with no pressure.

i agree with hoyamann, i really have no idea where the season will go. The Tech game could be the key to the Big XII season for us. It'd be great to stick it to them after last season, but off the top of my head i can't think of any team in the last couple years that has effectively shut down their offense. ball control could be as important in that game as any we'll play all season.

that being said, if we beat TT the team would maybe be 5-0 and have some confidence in themselves they haven't had in awhile. roughing up baylor and rolling into Mizzou at 6-0 could really start the Big XII out the right way. Winning three of the next five would probably give us the North.

Losing to TT could put us on a completely different path, and we could easily end up at 4-4 in the conference and in another cluster-$%#@ for the North title. It's probably silly to put so much emphasis on a game that early, but I'm guessing this year's team will be one that relies more on momentum than on the ability to bounce back and forge ahead. realistically we could be anywhere from 4 to 7 conference wins...i still put on my rose colored glasses at game time and expect us to win them all anyway

I agree the TT game will definitely be the crucial point in the schedule where we find out what kind of team we have. TT will be a real test for us again this year, and perhaps we will be a little more prepared than last year for their offense because another game like that and we can kiss the season goodbye. However i think we'll fair much better this year against them.

Did anyone listen to Travis Justice this morning? He made his prediction of the Big 12 North (with NU 3rd :rickjames ). Then it came up that the winner could essentially be drawn out of a hat with the state the North is in. So they decided to do THAT on the air. Lo and behold, the name they pulled out to win the North was Nebraska! If I remember correctly, Colorado and ISU followed, and Mizzou was last. (does it really matter what order KU and KSU was??) I am just excited that there is a solid chance that a hat is smarter than Trav!

So he picked them to finish third, but then went on to say it's a toss up? Sweet.

He also had three teams from the Big 10(that play each other) in his Top 10. They may all start there but no way do they end there. He said Texas will win the Big 12 and if the get past OU should play for the NC.

Pigskin Prognosticating

The College World Series is over and in Nebraska that means it's time to start talking football. The key for Husker fans this fall might just be patience.

The college football magazines vary radically in the accuracy of their predictions for the upcoming season but we've been looking them over to see what media people are thinking.

If you're a Husker fan, you're hoping that Phil Steele's college football review is accurate. He had the most optimistic viewpoint picking the Huskers number 23.

Steele writes, "While I was harsh on the Huskers last year, the turnaround should begin this year. Nebraska will turn it around, starting a new bowl streak and clearly a contender for the Big 12 North title."

At the other end of the spectrum is Sporting News. They rank the Huskers number 58. They list Bill Callahan as a coach on the hot seat and they also predict Nebraska will switch starting quarterbacks at least once.

Sporting News has Iowa State ranked 22.

Outside of Phil Steele, none of the magazines foresees a Big 12 North championship in Nebraska's future.

Conference Call predicts a third-place finish in the division. They also predict that Kansas will snap its long losing streak against Nebraska and that Iowa State will win the North.

Gold Sheet has the Huskers finishing fourth in the division. They say, "Callahan dreams about a North championship with a new QB. Just a return to the bowls might be more like it."

They also pick the Cyclones to win the North.

Athlon gives the Huskers a number 43 national ranking. They predict that Colorado will win the Big 12 North.

Lindy's has Nebraska in the middle of the pack at 46th nationally but they say, "The Huskers should be improved and could challenge in the Big 12 North.

Just about every magazine is optimistic about the long-term outlook for Husker football, praising the level of recruits Coach Callahan and company are bringing to Lincoln.

Good thing Phil Steele is the most accurate prognosticater as far as college football goes. He has the best track record since he started printing his predictions, and was able to predict Nebraska's mediorcrity last year, so more power to him.

I am sorry if I don't believe in ISU....they stink and there is no two ways to look at it....they have the least amount of talent in the conference(including Baylor)....they will be crushed this year and I can't wait to see why the "Experts" write about the Clones then......I'm not saying that NU will win the North(I think CU) , but I know ISU won't be within 3 games of the North......Trips to Lincoln and Columbia will dash any hopes of even a bowl game...

I definently like our chances to make it out of the north this year....

I too have a bad feeling that CU could have a breakout year now that they are mostly into the clear with their scandal(s). But CU could also choke on some easy games and slip into a nothing(which wouldn't bother me a bit!). If CU is still on their feet at the end of the year, the Big Red could easily come out of Boulder with an L.

I think ISU is a dark horse of sorts. They need to prove that their north crown wasn't a fluke, but you have to question their worst to first run in the north. Beating ISU could be key to winning the north.

Missouri is slipping into the cellar, and even with Smith, they won't be able to rely on him for everything, as teams will key on him. Pinkel will crumble, opening the flood gates to a dissappointing year for the tigers.

I think the Hawks and Cats of Kansas will be mediocre, middle of the pack. We have to get the pesky KSU monkey off of our back, they have had our number. I think we can handle a tough game at KU, and hopefully avenge some bad blood in Lincoln with KSU.

In the end, I think NU gets the Big 12 crown over CU by a game.
