Hey, i'm new here but i'm just wondering, why don't we run a spread offense? A ton of other programs use it very efficiently and it worked so well with Joe Ganz a couple years ago. I know we don't quite have the right quarterback for it right now but all they need to do is slightly change their recruiting tendencies to get the perfect quarterback for the system.

Bo doesn't want it, and isn't recruiting for it. He sent Watson to some weekend seminar at a Holiday Inn Express to learn how to run the zone read, so it's quite an investment. I don't think they have it in the budget for him to learn how to run another offensive system like that.

We FIRST have to find an Offenive Coordinator who know's how to draw one up. The guy we have now sure doesn't!

Why does he think that a zone-read offense is better than a spread? The spread seems to be "the thing" nowadays in the NCAA and i think Nebraska needs to jump on that bandwagon. They need to ditch Watson and his zone-read and bring in someone with the right mind for the spread. I know that you said they may not have it in the budget but it'd be nice if they could go out and get maybe... mike leach? if only he wasn't looking for a head coaching gig...

Actually this is the offense that Bo wants.
Watson would probably be running a more multiple WCO-like pass attack, or like 2008 if that helps describe it. That year we were mostly considered a spread really. Given total freedom he would probably run a QB out there at QB. Just to say.
But this is Bo's thing and by all means it should be perfect for Nebraska fans. I would say the spread is so "2006" as far as being "the thing", and zone read is closer to being "the thing" thanks to teams like Michigan and Oregon.
Bo is 100% not going to go out and grab some OC to bring in their philosophy...if/when we do have to replace Watson, it will be someone from within or someone brought in to run the offense Bo wants (this one). Which is why it's likely to be from within.

Yeah, that's an interesting discussion. I have a hard time believing that Oregon has that much more talent than we do, and they have a first year starter at QB too... so........

This isn't Watson's baby. This is Bo's baby, Watson is more comfortable in spread type offenses, and he is out of his element, Donny.
As for the budget, well, I was being sarcastic. I have a feeling if they want to change the offense money will not be the deciding factor. For better or worse, I think Bo is going to stick by this zone read, unless he decides to change it up for the Big Ten style of defenses, which I really don't know anything about.

Serious, and not trying to be a jerk: How do you know that Bo wants to run this offense and only this offense? Was this announced at a press conference or are you just speculating? Honestly, these are genuine questions, not rhetorical.
If you are basing this assumption on the fact that we are running something other than the offense Watson would choose if he had total control (i.e., WCO), then allow me to suggest that it is not so much that Bo demands we run a zone-read, but that he demands we do NOT run a WCO. In other words, I very much believe that Bo said something like, "Whatever you do, we're not running that ridiculous WCO stuff. I want to run the ball more." But what we do instead may very much be up for debate.
Personally, I think the ideal football team is one that plays stout defense (check) and has a strong run game to possess the ball and burn time off the clock. I wouldn't be shocked if Bo was thinking along these lines, even if the ultimate style of offense was left to Watson's discretion.
Regardless, I think a huge problem is that none of this is Watson's first choice and he is having to learn as he goes along. He might be a genius at the WCO, but he is mediocre at best now. Like Norm Chow and UCLA's pistol offense, Watson is a fish out of water here.
Folks, the zone read isn't a gimmick. It's probably what Tom Osborne would be running if he were still coaching.
Watch Oregon, that's what we want to be like. Right now, we don't execute as well as they do, and we don't playcall as well as they do. If we learn how to get to even 50% as good as they are at it, then look out, with our defense.

Exactly. Oregon just runs their offense really fast and doesn't give the defense time to settle down or get adjusted. If Oregon can go to the national title game with a Frosh QB we should have no excuses that Martinez is a frosh. Which i don't lay any blame at him.

I agree with your point, but technically Oregon's QB is a sophomore. He's basically the equivalent of Cody Green insofar as he got some limited action last year behind their starter, Masoli.
