The Spring Game on April 14th...

Maybe they didn't show it last year because NU wasn't formally in the Big Ten at the time?
They asked us, and TO and Bo said "No thank you." They then gave some BS about "keeping secrets" and whatnot, but they sold DVD copies, so that wasn't it. I know ESPNU had approached us a couple times in the past as well, and they said no. I hope the BTN forces it.
Because Tom and Bo feel that if you are going to use Spring Game footage to develop a gameplan against Nebraska, you better pay for it.

Exactly how much of an advantage could watching an opposing team's spring game give them?

Honest question.

It sounds like the game will be on so I hope we make the most of it. I can't understand why the game would not be on, seems like a great way to get good press because we call the game and the shots. It may be about selling tickets but i will drive from Denever just for fun to watch a spring game.

Which was stupid on their part because that would've been a huge tool in recruiting. National exposure plus the fact that selling 70+ tickets for a scrimmage would've been a great exposure to future recruits.

Didn't we get the spring game on ESPNU one year when Callahan was the coach? Maybe I'm wrong, but I think I remember it being televised one year.

It was on the NFL network.

Following up to my post above, it sounds like it's going to be broadcast, they just don't know if it will be online, delayed, or live.

Why/how would a Spring game give opponents any more of an advantage than any game tape from the previous year?

The only answer I can think of is if they were breaking out a brand new offense, like when we went to the zone read with T-Mart. Maybe some of those early long runs he had happened because no one had seen us do that before.

It doesn't especially since other teams could have bought a copy of the DVD. That's the point.

But, it looks like the issue will be rectified this year.

Would be cool if we could fill that place up. It's a great game to take your kids to and it's cheap. Nothing better than a slice of pizza on a beautiful spring day at Memorial. Except for a slice of pizza on a beautiful fall day at Memorial. Anyway, I'm doing my part in trying to put asses in the seats and bought 6 tickets. Looking forward to seeing some new faces on D and hopefully seeing some creativity with our younger receiving corps and running backs.

Exactly the reason Bo and TO don't want it televised. The athletic dept saying "we're worried about a competitive advantage" is an obscure way of saying "put your butt in the seat and help us sell the program to recruits visiting. We know you need to see this Spring Game and the recruits need to see a large crowd, c'mon...."

I fully understand this thinking. It is very impressive to see a crazy mob of 60,000+ watching a scrimmage. However, if UNL can get a large crowd AND have it on national television that would impress a lot more than the 10-15 scholarship recruits in attendance. But, will a big crowd show up if it's on TV, especially if it is cold and rainy?

Kinda a "catch 22".

I think most people are overestimating the impact it would have on attendance. So many people seem to say "I'm taking the whole family, because it's cheap, and the only way we can all go." If it's on TV, would some of those people change their minds? Probably. But I highly doubt it's going to affect attendance more than 10%. Plus, schools like Oregon, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, USC, Texas, etc... all have their games televised, and it's basically a three hour informercial for that school.

IMO, a small hit in attendance is worth the fact that we're getting out name out there more for recruits. Hell, on signing day, Nebraska was pretty much nowhere to be found on ESPNU, except when Peat said "No thank you." To not use a giant recruiting tool like this is absolutely crazy.

Totally agree.

I think if that truly is the reason behind why it's not televised, then they are seriously underestimating Husker Nation, especially considering the sellout streak. It's a great atmosphere (if the weather is nice) and is the last chance we get to watch our Huskers play until late August/early September.

Like I said before, I agree that even if we don't sell out if it gets televised, it would be worth the publicity.

Reward > Risk.
