Trump ran as an economic populist in 2016. He ran on universal healthcare, improving wages, lower taxes and I even think he mentioned student loan relief. The most popular thing he did in his first term, and is backed up by his approval rating going up, was the stimulus checks and people actually voted for him this time because he put his name on the check and thats what people remember. 
 

This is the way for dems moving forward. Run as FDR 2.0 and leave the culture war nonsense at home. They took the bait with that s#!t and got off message. And most of them, including all of leadership are spineless, weak and out of touch elitists. Walz was the most popular person in the election this year and Harris campaign sidelined him for a good month, at his highest approval, because they thought he was a liability for calling republicans weird. They are still stuck in the 90s and wonder why they are so unpopular. They need to take a note from Canadian liberals who gained like 30 points overnight when they fought back against Trumps tariffs. Schumer will step down before the end of April, just like Biden did when the pressure for him to not run again became too much and it cant come soon enough.

That's what they should do. But as @Lorewarn posted, the Dems will find a way to "rebrand" or some other feckless approach without actually making any changes. They'll double and triple down on the same stupidity that lost to Trump twice.

Im not so sure anymore. The dem base is becoming the left version of the tea party at the moment. If Schumer steps down or resigns, it will show which way the party is moving. Lets just say, I wouldnt be shocked if AOC Is the nominee in 2028. She has done a nice job the last few years of distancing herself from toxic people like Cori Bush and Tlaib while still keeping her core values the same. Republican voters can laugh all they want at that, but the republican politicians know, and thats why they attack her all the time. If she wasnt a threat, they wouldnt say a word about her. Notice how theyve been attacking Sanders quite a bit lately now that hes getting thousands of people in red/purple districts to his stop the oligarchs rallies? They know.

What do you make of this? I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the median US voter is more conservative than myself on a lot of topics. 
 

There’s endless critiquing that can be done of why Harris/Walz lost - I’ll leave that to others because I have no desire to do so. But I don’t think they lost because they tacked to the center.

Also, at least as a matter of sheer power, I would rather Dems find a way to build an enduring advantage in Congress rather than pinning all their hopes on winning presidential elections. Doing so will definitely require a big tent including progressives where it makes sense but a lot of moderates in swing districts.

I would say FDR was pretty moderate, but he did a lot of good things that helped people. I dont even know what moderate means anymore. Run on doing nothing, just keep everything the same even though we know its not working well right now? Does raising wages not sell? Does lowering grocery prices not sell? Does solving the housing crisis not sell? Does improving the healthcare system so people arent worried about going bankrupt if they get sick not sell? Isnt this what Trump ran on in ‘16 and a little bit in ‘24? What did Clinton offer besides not Trump?  Kamala sidelined her very popular VP candidate to campaign with Liz Cheney. I dont know if she would have won if they let Walz off the leash, but we know she didnt do that and she lost. If you have a charismatic and effective communicator, you can bring people to your side and possibly get more people involved in politics. Economic populism sells. Stop getting sucked into the culture war BS.
 

If Trump did the stuff Biden did like lower medication costs for people on medicare, the infrastructure bill or the CHIPS act he would be yelling from the roof tops every day he did these things, but not a peep from Biden about the good things he did until after Trump won, then he went around talking about all that stuff. Trump has already put up signs on infrastructure projects around the country that he is responsible for them. We know thats BS, but the average voter doesnt. Trump put his name on the stimulus checks and Biden didnt, even though they both did it. Who did voters credit for the very popular stimulus checks? Not Biden. Dems suck at marketing themselves and their popular positions.

Bernie is the most popular senator in the nation. Poll after poll shows this and he is far from charismatic and not great at effectively communicating his positions. Yet we are told progressives cant win a general, so even people that liked Bernie voted for Hilary in the primary. In 2016, polls during the primaries showed Bernie beating Trump by significant margins while Hilary was within the MOE vs Trump. We know how that turned out and even Trump admitted he is glad he didnt have to run against Bernie. We will see what happens moving forward, but the dem party as it stands now is incredibly unpopular and its people like Schumer and Jeffries that are proving why.

Counter point: FDR was the most popular President in history and the Dems held the House for decades on his policies.

I'm not opposed to moderate positions if they have a plan and policies. But mostly we get politicians that try for the "middle", which is rudderless and just trying to curry votes. Only very charismatic politicians like Obama can win this way. Voters have seen through this for the most part.

When Biden won and the Dems had a lot of control of Congress, I said they need to stay center left and not go after some far left crap. I was told I was wrong because this was their chance to do what they want.

Regardless of anyone's opinion of AOC the fact of the matter is she would get absolutely trucked in an Electoral College election.  This country has proven twice now it's not ready to elect a woman and especially a woman of color from New York.  She'd be better off trying to primary Schumer.  Get some time in the Senate and see if the swing states can get past their misogynistic racist roots but we've been waiting centuries for that to happen.  

A Bashear / AOC ticket might pull the big tent together and draw in independents.  The makeup of the Electoral College has to be taken into consideration or we'll continue with the s#!t show we're experiencing now.

I'm a Pete fan and voted for him in the 2020 primary.

But Democrats should absolutely not run anybody associated with Biden in 2028. It is paramount that the party nominate somebody new. The Party needs a top-to-bottom flushing. They need to pivot to the center on the vast majority of issues, stop mentioning anything that has to do with an acronym, and launch the progressive wing of the party into the Sun. If they manage to do that, they'll have long term electoral success.

The stink on the Biden Administration by left wing advocacy groups is pretty apparent, isn't it?

He staffed his administration with officials loyal to Elisabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. It's why AOC was a ride-or-die Biden supporter from the start. 

He: implemented a poorly thought out Student Loan Forgiveness Program that was doomed from the start; he sided with Pennsylvania Steel Workers and blocked the acquisition of U.S Steel by Nippon, his immigration policies were a lot more friendly to Asylum seekers than previous administrations, he took dozens of steps (both big and small) to win over the progressive wing of the Party. Most of which were pretty bad ideas.

His biggest accomplishments are going to be the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act, moderate bills that are beneficial to America for a lot of reasons. Both of which are going to be gutted by the Trump Administration both because Trump is a moron and because they just so happened to be passed during Biden's Presidency.

Weirdly enough, I think they'd have a harder time undermining Buttegieg than most candidates. They'll want to exploit the homophobia, but it could easily backfire. Pete is more meritocracy than DEI at this point, and can disarm anyone they put in front of him.

I could be wrong, because the campaign against Kamala Harris was able to frame her as a socialist left loony on the panel shows, supplemented by a heavy subtext of uppity Black whore across the internet.

This...and, what I was thinking about when making the post was the party latching onto social issues like transgender women being able to compete in women's sports when that affects such a small part of the population.  Yes, it's a small issue.  But, Republicans were able to latch onto things like this and run with it and there's a sizable amount of the population that agrees with Republicans on this...as do I.

It just seemed like Democrats did themselves no favors on a number of issues when they could have showed some moderation and it wouldn't have hurt the party in elections so much.  Student Loan Forgiveness Program....there are a number of ways the administration could have helped the people in these situations without going all in on the worst idea available.
