That's what you do when your offense is innconsistent.

Correction: that's what you do when your place kicker can run a 4.4.

And about that rule with the knee being down, the NCAA rules state an exception for field goals and fake field goals. The ball was live the whole time.

Otherwise, fake field goals where the holder tries to throw wouldn't work.
