This is not Callahan's deal. But the post above that his loyalty to Cosgrove is a problem, is right. Callahan's offense is the best it has looked during his time here. Keller is doing a great job. The receivers are doing a better job...TE's are catching some key passes. Running game seems to be stuck somewhat but seems mostly due to our O-line getting owned (our O-line must improve). The injury to Glenn hurts us in the running game.
Here's what I see happening. With our schedule, it is likely that our defense is going to suffer another 3 or 4 of these horrendous performances. If so, Cosgrove and the entire defensive staff will be gone at season's end. So, we need to look now at what D-Coordinators are out there that can bring in their entire defensive staff to resurrect the Blackshirts and get college age players to be hungry and passionate about playing defense. I don't think it would be fair for a D-Coordinator to come here and not be able to bring in their own staff (i.e. replace Cosgrove only), especially because the entire eye of Husker Nation will be looking to them to save our defense. We need someone who is up to the challenge knowing this is a great opportunity...the weak need not apply.
So, Callahan's instructions from the top should be...hey, if you want your friend Cosgrove and his staff to keep their jobs, then you must find a way to turn around this brutal defense. Send the message now...do not wait for more of these types of games. That is reasonable...Callahan and Cosgrove MUST show they can turn it around...or expectation would be Cosgrove and defensive staff is out. The only question I have for those who want Cosgrove out immediately is...who do you bring in mid-season? Is there an example of this being done successfully at other programs? I too am upset with the job Cosgrove is doing...but realistically I don't think he can be canned mid-season...
Our defense is the huge liability. The offensive is doing well and if we had a defense that was playing at a B level or better (instead of the current grade of F), I think we'd be a BCS team this year as Keller has shown he plays to win.
