Assistant Coach
I'm not an expert by any means and don't particularly have a lot of football knowledge. But, my takes from the game:
* Boy, we have a stout defense. We really shut down Taylor today and their talented stable of RBs. All the credit in the world for Suh & co.
* One guy (West? or O'Hanlon?) falling asleep on one play does not take away from the type of game our D brought, especially in the second half. It does, however, take away that W and turn it into an L. It is what it is.
* Zac Lee is tough and athletic, and makes some real good improvisation. Teams have to respect his speed when he breaks the pocket, and he exploited that a couple times today to throw off the scramble for some big gains.
* Zac Lee is a first-time starter on the big stage and sure looked like that today. He was definitely rattled on some of those throws that didn't come close to where they were supposed to go.
* But, the receivers didn't help with some key drops either (I'm looking at you, Meno).
* Roy Helu, what a beast. That kid has some serious vision, moves, and wheels. He never gives up. Every team could use a few Roy Helus.
* That Big 12 officiating crew couldn't have made themselves look more like they were bribed by VT than they did on that drive. On the one hand, we killed ourselves by letting the situation get to us and making it worse with needless false starts. On the other, ticky tacky holding calls taking away one score and not even LOOKING at Meno's touchdown again? Are you kiddin' me?
* We had plenty of chances to put this game away. Plenty. Whether it was scoring some touchdowns, staying within field goal range, clock management, slightly more accuracy from Lee to Gilleylen - this was not a game lost on any one play or call.
* VT was damned lucky, but the moment belongs to VT. They deserve it, and good for them. A pity we're on the short side of such a game - again.
* One game at a time. The only statistic that matters now is 2-1. Let's hope it motivates this team for the rest of the year. The worst thing that can happen now is to get caught up in the emotion, sag down and start out flat. This is motivation. Kick some asses next time. Don't pull a 2007 Kansas.
* It's hard, being a fan.
