Five-Star Recruit

The Doane head coach and former Husker star will share his thoughts on college football every Monday in the Journal Star. "We beat Northwestern College 16-10 on Saturday night. It was good to get a win for me, but I was more happy for the kids. They fought through some adversity and were able to come out with a ‘W’ after being down at halftime.

Our defense got the game ball. In the fourth quarter, they had a goal-line stand and made some interceptions to seal the win. But I was happy with the offense cutting down on turnovers. We had only one versus Northwestern after having way too many in the first two weeks. We also had three takeaways, so we won the turnover battle.

I am concerned that we had a punt, a field goal and an extra point blocked so we need to shore that up. Next week, we play No. 7 Morningside at home so we better be ready for a tough game.

The Huskers are now 3-0, but they have to find a way to get the offense moving. Maybe they need to change some things up. Shuffle some people in and out of the lineup. I’m not just talking about the skill positions guys — the offensive line might need a shakeup. And it’s not just the players, they need to run plays that the guys can execute flawlessly. They had way too many penalties, and I’m sure their staff know this.

It was good to see Cory Ross get it going. He looked like the Cory Ross we expected. He was running decisively and getting some yards after contact and no fumbles. He got some big first downs in the fourth quarter that helped them hang on for the win.

It’s obvious the defense can’t carry the team the whole year. Sooner or later, Nebraska will play a team that will put up some points or the “D” just won’t have a good day, and the offense will have to hold up its end.

Lastly, I feel way too much was made of Ohio beating Pittsburgh. People need to let Frank Solich go. Even if NU had lost to Pitt, it would have meant nothing (even if the local media tried to tell you differently). Nothing that happens at either school will change what was happening to Nebraska in Solich’s last few years or the direction the program was heading. Just be happy for Solich that he has a job, and be happy Nebraska is 3-0 without having played their best football."
