Tommy is a 21 year old college student. He's interested in playing football and getting laid. If he sat around doing stuff like watching the 1995 Orange Bowl on Youtube, well, frankly I'd be a bit worried about the guy.

Chalk this is up as something he should "be aware" of, but, not necessarily something I expect him to readily care about or offer commentary on. He was a baby and he's not from this state - he's here to do one thing and that's win games from now through 2016.

Now, if he didn't know the years of the titles, that might be a bit of an issue. I would expect a division one football player to have a general understanding of the tradition of the program he plays for. But, tradition doesn't help you complete a big throw on third down and it doesn't directly help you compete for conference titles.

If it were 1993, would you care if Tommie Frazier didn't know about the 1971 team? the game of the century?

I think with all the trophies and blogs and article on the team I suspect he knows more than he's leading on. Probably knows about them but sicking of talking about it or knows where the discussion will lead to. .... how a team he has led hasn't been as successful, then again, no one has.

If you are correct, then it is not surprising we are not a top ten team. Obviously, if high school football stars (frankly we don't invite any 'non stars' to play for us) have no basic knowledge of the schools, teams, coaches and players (past and present) of the schools they are interested in attending, then it is only expected they really won't care much about winning or losing games. You need some basic knowledge and interest in the team, school, program and coaching staffs in order to make any kind of intelligent decision about which college is a good 'fit'. If kids don't have any idea where they want to go to school, then it is unlikely they will come to play with the kind of desire and passion needed to become great players. Whether a team wins or loses is dependent on a number of things. Among the most important is desire and passion and hunger to win! Coaches can inspire the team somewhat but one can't take a bunch of strangers from all over the country and bring them together and turn them into champions if they don't want to be. To become a champion, you have to want to at an intense, high level; well beyond the level of one's opponents. It is not enough to be a great athlete, you must have a burning desire, a yearning and craving for being the best, playing as hard as one can and making the sacrifice to accomplish lofty goals.

A team comprised of players with no clue as the heritage of the program is starting without the important motivating source for the drive and effort to become the best. High school athletes who are stars in the local schools have to understand that what was relatively easy in high school will be very difficult and require the utmost effort and the work ethic common to a very small percentage of athletes, and a passion. You bring 85 scholarship kids in and you MUST ensure they desire and effort is there.

 
If I'm reading the OP correctly, Tommy can't name the players on the '95 team, but nowhere does it say he's unaware or disrespectful of Nebraska's championship history.

Some of the most devout Husker fans on this board are shaky on the players and events prior to their time.

There are players who bone up on the history and players of the team they are joining. I always think that's really smart and cool, but it's cool because it's unusual.

Good for you, I was 19 years old in 1985 and I can probably name 10 of the guys on the 85 Bears team. So what does that say about me? I do know Henry Wachter and I believe Lee Kunz were on the roster for the Bears. Do you know who those guys are?

This quote doesn't surprise me, and it's not a big deal. Armstrong and most of his teammates are athletes. They aren't super dorks that sit at home and dig up the history of a football program that is over 500 miles from their home.

 
DON'T CARE if Tommy knows anything about the 95 team or not. Why should he? He was 2 f'ing years old. It is incumbent upon the program to not go so long without doing something of substance that people can remember. In summary; no problem with Tommy, big problem with a program that has done nothing noteworthy in that timeframe.
