Tuesday's practice report
The Huskers worked out on the grass with no pads for their second practice of fall camp.
"We're not going to be satisfied until we see perfection out there, so we're way far away from having that," Husker coach Bo Pelini said. "But we see some guys getting better, getting a chance to know some of the newcomers and see what they can do and where they fit. It's been a productive couple of days."
Was Kevin Dixon kicked off because of the two citations with the UNL Police?
"It had something to do with it, obviously," Pelini said.
Pelini didn't have a timetable on when offensive lineman Jaivorio Burkes might return.
"We'll see," he said. "It's more of a medical issue."
Husker receivers coach Ted Gilmore said junior Menelik Holt had maybe the best practice of his career.
"If he can continue to build upon that, we've got something," Gilmore said. "That's the thing. You got a lot of guys that do certain things good, but we don't have a lot of guys that do everything. So until someone steps up and can be your every-down player, the competition continues."
Some nuggets:
True freshman Micah Kreikemeier, from West Point Central Catholic, blew out his knee in the summer. He'll be redshirted.
And junior tight end Tyson Hetzer, a JUCO recruit who sat out muich of the spring with a knee injury, is not on the 105-man fall roster but is close to a recovery.
"We suspect he'll be healthy probably in the next 10 days, two weeks," Pelini said. "Just obviously with that injury, he wasn't quite ready yet, so we decided not to put him in the 105."
About the four freshman recruits from the 2008 class who aren't cleared to play yet -- David Whitmore, Justin Rogers, Antonio Bell and David Grant -- Pelini said: "It's kind of a work in progress. We got a few weeks until school starts. That's kind of the date. We're kind of at the clearinghouse of the NCAA, waiting for test scores back, that type of thing."
About the race for the backup quarterback spot between Patrick Witt and Zac Lee, he said: "We feel good about that whole group. Time will tell. The competition is good. They're both playing well. We'll see how it works as the game goes on."
Witt came into fall camp with the edge.
