Tunnel Walk

Let me just say this. Huskervision is not producing the Tunnel walk. The last tunnel walk they made completely from start to finish was in 2006. Snitily Carr, a local ad agency has been creating them for a very long time. In return they get some box seats to the game. The idea for the tunnel walk though is created by Huskervision, and since 2006 I think it has been very stale. I said this ealier, but it's essentially just the same thing every year. "5 Nation titles, 3 Heisman winners, 300-some academic all Americans, etc etc etc" They throw in some flash graphics, cut out some memorable players from the past... it's been the same for a long time now and for some reason they refuse to get creative with it.

I had a long talk with my wife yesterday about it. (She's the one that sparked the idea for the "In The Deed the Glory" vid), and we just talked about a general lack of interest to getting the stadium excited, and a large part of it starts with a lack of effort on the tunnel walk.

I want to get the feeling that the players and coaches are emotional and passionate about the game. Go and shoot something in the stadium with the players, write a script of some sort similar to what we did in 2006, and bring back the emotion and stop with the graphics. I know they can do it because the best tunnel walk of all time was produced completely in house by the Huskervision full timers in 2006.
Your "In the Deed" vid is one of my all time favorites. It's short and sweet but oh so powerful. What I would like to see are maybe some plays of the game from the previous week. Highlight some of the current players and not focus so much on the past. Not saying I want to see past players pushed aside, but highlight some of the newer guys. Roziers run is great; Fraziers Fiesta Bowl run is great; Cory's run...again...great. But it gets old seeing those over and over and over and over. And I think that's what I enjoy about your vid. You focused on current players at the time.

I say we create our own HB "Huskervision" and come up with our own "Tunnel Walk"

Also the player introductions were hard to hear with the music being to loud. Turn down the music and bring up the player's voices.
What they need to do is update the stadium sound systems. The sound comes from North Stadium - they get drowned out with music and everybody in south just can't hear anything. Apparently, Huskers.com did a survey a couple of years ago ask fans if they felt the stadium sound systems needed to be updated, and we said NO???? The only people voting must have been up in the sky boxes.

They need a new agency then. I've got a good one I freelance with here in KC that does a lot of sport branding...plus I'd love a chance to work on it too

Regarding the sound...the sound designer needs to get access to the stadium and do a final mix sitting in one of those seats. But most likely, the ad agency is just having the video editor mix it for them...which is why it sounds like crap.

epoc, what's the deal with the current year's rendition? The products from 2008-2010 really haven't been that bad, but this is a decidedly worse effort that we haven't seen the likes of in almost a decade. What gives, if you have any idea?

That was pretty bad. Most of the CGI looked phoned in. The Rex part was embarrassing. You take the nicest, calmest off-the-field player and stick him in front of a camera sober and you aren't going to get something that psyches many people up.

I liked the part where Crouch and Frazier looked like they were running side by side and then looked over at each other. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

For my money, I like a good combination of (quality) CGI, past highlights, and something emotional with current players (e.g. locker room footage). 2009 and 2001 did it for me, among others. And I want exploding CGI helmets. Exploding helmets are cheesy and awesome.

I feel the same way with everything you said but I won't complain..i only care if we win the game...

In my opinion they tried to do the cheapest and fastest way to make the video. It seems like they could careless about it. Get someone new and I am sure they will put passion in it.

I don't want to throw anybody under the bus here, as I'm quite removed from the situation now. I will take a guess though. I interviewed for a job for the ad agency that does the tunnel walk about a year and a half ago. I had a job at the time, but was thinking about making a change. I interviewed at a place in Omaha and the ad agency that does the tunnel walk in Lincoln. They let me know that the person that normally handles the tunnel walk was on their way out, and they were looking for somebody to take it over. They offered me the job, and I declined for a few reasons. Took the job in Omaha, and now am running my own production company.

As to why the quality of the graphics dropped, my guess would be that new team they have on the tunnel walk isn't as well versed in After Effects and Cinema 4D as the person that they had on the job before. Again, I am removed from the situation now, so this is all speculation.

My criticism of the tunnel walk lies mostly within the planning and effort on the creative end. It's lazy and repetitive. I wouldn't want to be the person they look to, to create a new graphical look of the same idea every year. It's not why I turned down the job, I would have loved to push a more video/narrative based tunnel walk. Again I don't think having better graphics would make it any better. It's just the same thing in a different package that we have been getting for the last 5 years.

Personally, I think the narrative aspect (showing players talking to the fans through the screen) takes away from the building of excitement/noise-which to me is the whole point of the tunnel walk. When players/coaches speak on the video everyone shuts up to hear them. That may also have something to do with the less than ideal sound system, but even with a state of the art system i still think everyone would get quiet, it is instinct to listen when people are talking to you. It seems hard to get that excitement back up after you have lost the crowd.

1. Play some Hans Zimmer or NIN type crescendo/climax building music.

- Watch these without your heartbeat rising.

3. Show some recognizable, tradition based sayings.

4. Clips of huge hits/cool plays from this years team with quick cuts to the next play. Pure action, we don't need to see entire plays.

5. Have that Hans Zimmer type crescendo music lead straight into the flashing red light/Sirius with just slight pause. - It gives time for one last huge crowd build up before the out of rhythm claps to Sirius start. (We have a crowd full of Navin R. Johnsons)

- I'm telling you, the "In the Deed" video that epocSoN made completely nailed it. It completely set the tone for the crowd for the entire game. JMHO

The only people voting either can't hear anyway, or have their huge over-the-ear headphones with the long, metal retractable antenna cranked up to replays of 'The Lawrence Welk Orchestra.'

I still remember once when the defense came out to AC/DC's 'Back In Black' and the fossil sitting behind me started complaining to his Jurassic wife that the 'terrible sound' was going to disrupt the play-call for the defense.

I thought most of the videos were lacking for the day. Granted there wasn't many big hits, but the hits of the game video was ridiculous. There were "hits" that we're nearly shoelace tackles and they beefed them up with sound effects. Lame.
