Wow, this is amazing. And so far, no suspensions. So much for taking the moral high ground, Fresno.

Two dozen Fresno State football players tied to welfare fraud
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- As many as two dozen football players from Fresno State University have been implicated in a welfare fraud investigation involving a county Department of Social Services worker accused of filing for false benefits for them and others.

It's the latest in a series of problems that have plagued the university's athletic department over the decades.

The social services eligibility specialist was arrested last month by an investigator with the Fresno County District Attorney's Office but has not been charged. University officials have declined to comment beyond a written statement, saying they don't want to impede the investigation.

"It's an ongoing investigation out of the DA's office. We don't comment on ongoing investigations, and that's what we're standing on," said Paul Ladwid, assistant athletic director, who was reached in Nebraska, where the Bulldogs are scheduled to play Saturday.

The allegations involve members of the 2010 squad, and many are still on the team this year. The university said in its written statement that "violations of the Code of Conduct did occur and punitive actions have been levied upon a number of current student-athletes."

The athletes could face additional penalties once the investigation is complete.

School officials would not say how many implicated students are on the 2011 team, nor would they describe the scope of the punishment.

.....

University officials said the NCAA and the Western Athletic Conference had been notified of the allegations and that, "There is no indication whatsoever that any NCAA violation has occurred." The NCAA did not return telephone calls or respond to email inquiries.
And yet they suspended five players at Ohio State - and forced Tressel out with an impending Show-Cause ruling - for bartering some university swag for tattoos. Way to be consistent, NCAA.

With all of these awful happening in college football, i really hope Nebraska stays true and doesn't have anything happen to this magnitude. Credit Bo for keeping our guys in line. (Knock on wood)

So the players received IMPROPER benefits through FRAUD and yet think "That an NCAA violation has not occured." How has a violation not occured here???? :WTH

Well, in their defense, Fresno is a sh#t hole...

But yeah, the NCAA needs to step up the consistency...

Maybe there is no NCAA ramifications yet because the guy in charge of cracking the whip :cop: just quit and now the Commish of Conference USA is the head smoke chaser. Why oh why was Dan Beebe not asked to lead the witch hunt.

It's a government fraud case, but there just happened to be players involved, it wasn't only for players it was for a whole load of people.

They'll get in plenty of trouble. The government tends to take defrauding them seriously.

welfare fraud is like a parking ticket in California...after all Jerry Brown is giving illegals free college scholarships, do you think anyone cares about welfare fraud?

Depends on how widespread and public it is, like everything else. Sounds like it was enough to hit the AP.

First of all, the NCAA has never been consistent about these types of situations, so I can't say I'm really surprised.

And I'm hoping Nebraska doesn't get caught up in something horrible. I don't think Bo would, but I guess you never know.

The real question we should all be asking ourselves is that when the NCAA finally rules on this and forces Fresno State to forfeit today's victory...do we claim we actually won the game?
