Two Punt Returners?

>> Safety Nate Gerry: The Huskers need an infusion of speed and power on their special teams, and the fastest kid in South Dakota ought to be able to provide it. Could Gerry play gunner? Could he scream off the edge to block punts? Another recruiting steal.

Really good work by Sam this morning
Didn't mean to steal your thunder, sorry. I just read what KCHusker said and remembered that from this morning.

The biggest thing a strong punt rush does is make the punt team commit to blocking a second or two longer instead of taking off free reign to cover the punt.

During Solich's tenure didn't we often got with 2 OR even 3 guys back there? I seem to recall there being times where there was always a guy there to A. Help recover the ball if need be B. To pick off a gunner
Solich and TO both used 3 returners occasionally. Several years NU had more than one returner with multiple punt returns for a TD. I am not sure how rule changes over the years have caused strategy changes.

I remember when Joe Walker and Bobby Newcombe were back there as return men. I like the idea of two and using one as basically a personal protector so all that the return man has to do is focus on catching the football. We don't need a guy to be electrifying in the return game with our offense as stacked as it is, we need a guy we can count on to catch the football.

That's a good point the other return men do become blockers so they are not wasted.

I remember DeJuan Groce back there during that time. He was free to be a beast on returns.

I don't think having two guys back wouldn't be the worst idea, especially with the special teams play over the past couple years...

If we could have one guy back, would be preferable...
