Ubben calls out Blackshirts

I hope the D starts attacking more rather than waiting for the ball carrier to come to them. Gomes and Thenarse got blown up by Minett because they let him initiate the contact. Did love when Martin showed them how its done with his big pop on Minett.

I cant disagree with what he said. Though with a little under 2 weeks to prepare for Thomas and KState, bo will have his guys ready. If UCF can shut down Thomas, we are certainly able to it.
Agreed, this helps big time considering he's their only hope of doing anything.

I can't really back it with stats (i haven't checked), but does anyone else feel the steinkuhler has been playing better than Crick so far this year?

Perhaps my expectations for Crick were a bit high, but he's definitely not the same player without Suh lining up next to him.

Going into the season we knew we would miss Dillard and be young at LB, despite the injuries, but it seems to me that the D line has been inconsistent, at best, at stopping the run. While i still feel our D is VERY good, it seems our true strength is the secondary. Its almost like we hope our opponent gets tired of the 3 to 4 yd runs or gets behind by too much that they are forced to pass. Vs SDSU, the game was close enough that SDSU really didn't need to give up their game plan and stuck with the short yardage runs. In the end, they obviously ran out of time and did pass, which they paid for.

As for the rest of the Big XII, K State and as much as I hate to admit it, Iowa St, look to be frustrating games unless our run defense gets shored up, or we jump out to a sizable lead. These teams seem to execute simple, more run based schemes, much like SDSU, but with more talent. As long as NU plays mistake free football, i have no doubts, but that's a big question mark with a RS Freshman at QB.

Hopefully we forget about SDSU game, get the run defense straightened out, get Martinez completing passes again, and all will be fine. I couldn't imagine many things worse than dropping one to K-state our last year in the Big XII. I guess time will tell. GBR.

Our LB's were inconsistent the first few games, but SDSU they seemed to be doing pretty well. The problem was that the D-Line was getting bossed around and the LB's bit on a few traps. Because of this, the DB's had to come up to make the stop which resulted of 4-7 yard runs instead of merely 1-3.

In the Tampa 2/Peso, we're going to give up a lot of those 4-5 yard runs. If we're having the DT's 2-gapping and DE's outside containing, there will be some room for any back worth his salt, especially if our LB's don't play disciplined or get caught up in the trench. The difference last year was Suh, because he would either beat the double teams, or create a huge pile at the LOS and slow everything down. Without Suh in '03, it was a similar story for the Blackshirts - a little mushy between the 20's, but LOCK DOWN in the red zone.

On the flip side, the Pelini Bros' philosophy is that there aren't many teams out there with the patience to try to take 3-4 yard cracks all the way down the field anymore, and we saw that from SoDak St. The message the Pelinis are sending is: "Go ahead and try to gash us, but as soon as we push you back or you get penalized, you're going to have to throw the ball. And when you do, we have some absolute ballhawks back there to snag anything and everything." Dennard's INT was a thing of beauty - none of our receivers have made a catch like that all year.

Their QB did have a little more time than most of us are comfortable with, but aside from the absolute blatant call on the guard holding Stein (he did a good job breaking through), the guys in stripes refused to call SEVERAL holds on ALL their O-Line. I was about as disgusted with the lack of holding calls as I was with our offensive effort. If the refs aren't going to call holding, I think our guys should start employing some of those shirt/pad/helmet-grabbing techniques. There was also an uncalled horse-collar on Martinez. We get called for that all the time. The 'Taunting' call was absolutely bogus. I hate officials.

Aside from a sporadic gain on a slow-developing zone play, our offense will be predicated on play action - no doubt about it. That, and Martinez scrambling on passing plays when his first 2 reads are covered. Something tells me we're going to look a lot like our '03 team before it's all said and done - Lavonte David as a serviceable Demorrio Williams, hopefully.
That sums up my thoughts. The B12 is a little down this season, which gives us a very good chance to take the title without a dominate team. I'd also add that we're seeing what playing a frosh at QB can cost us. TM is a dynamic player, but he's unreliable and undisciplined at times - inconsistent. The rest of the offense, especially the seniors, need to provide that even-keel to keep TM focused and help balance him out. IMO our team will go as our offensive line goes. I'm not worried about our defense.
With T-Mart at QB and two solid RB's we should run the wishbone.

Even though our rush D has shown some weaknesses this year, you gotta remember it comes down to how many points opposing offenses score, not yards gained. We were the definition of bend-don't-break defense last year, and I'd say we definitely resemble that style again this year.

My point is that while we might give up 100+ yards to Daniel, we'll stop him when it matters most. And our secondary will be more than ready when Coffman's number gets called in the huddle.

i saw holes in the middle of our defense that scared me to death, if SDSU had a break away runner with speed we would have gotten beat, Thomas will test us again, we better win the line of scrimmage or it will be a long evening in Manhattan.
