USA Today Head Coach Salary Database

You get what you pay for. Time to pay more for better coaches.

With the exception of my second favorite team, Notre Dame, paid only  1.65M annual salary with no bonus and zero buyout :thumbs .

Brian Kelly, #64 in the country.  Jesus Touchdown is happy :D

Per AL.com "Notre Dame is a private school and is thus not required to release salary information. However, Kelly was estimated to earn $4 million under the terms of his previous contract."

I get the feeling that some people feel like the act of throwing money at a coach or really any problem in life is what creates results.  It's still the person you hire. The money is still just a tool to bring in more options.  The problem isn't that Mike Riley isn't getting paid what he's worth, the problem is aren't paying the right person.  I think the last thing any of us want is to both pick the wrong guy and overpay him.

Getting the right guy and paying him is important, but equally as important (or more so) is what are you paying his assistants.

Will be relatively painless financially to let go of Riley at the end of the year at least.

Don't look at the salaries.  Look at the buyouts

"M."  Not "K."

Do you get what you pay for?

Paying our HC 11th out 14 in the conference.

I realize that was his going rate, but if the standard is higher you have to do what it takes to meet that standard..

Big ten $$$ per win (in millions) in 2016: (public Schools only.  PSU not included either)

Michigan St 2.67

Rutgers 2.30

Illinois 1.76

Purdue 1.63

Michigan 1.36

Iowa 1.09

Ohio St 1.01

Maryland 0.93

Indiana 0.88

Nebraska 0.75

Wisconsin 0.58

Minnesota 0.57

Hard to infer much on a 1-year snapshot, but Wisconsin is perennially underpaying and over-performing.   Mich State was an anomaly.  Rutgers, Illinois and Purdue overpaid as an attempt to get better.  It seems to have worked for Purdue, somewhat.  Minnesota and Indiana had assistants promoted from within, and had some success.

At 9 wins, Riley is a bargain, but that's not his average here, obviously.

Michigan and Ohio State are getting what they paid for.
