UTEP Week Pressers

Handing out more than 11 and already threatening to take them away if they don't perform.

Not honoring the tradition.
It sounds like taking them away is more, the 2nd guy up will come and take the blackshirt off your back if you don't perform to the standards White expects.

I'm not trying to be pessimistic (it just comes naturally).

I don't really love the sound of Rhule saying in yesterday's press conference in reference to running backs that "we're going to play all four of them." Really don't like the sound of that. That probably means "nobody stood out in camp."

If we had four Ameer's or four <insert another great back here> then it would be fine. But we clearly don't.

Here's to hoping one of these guys gets it in his head to go ape s*** and blaze some trails for our offense early in the season.
Having 4 running backs listed on the depth chart as "OR" is not on Rhule because Rhule doesn't coach them and decide starters.  That decision actually falls on the RB coach EJ Barthel.

Other than Dowdell, coach Barthel has been with these same running backs for over a year, including last Spring, last Fall, last season, winter conditioning, this Spring and Fall Camp.  That's plenty of time to evaluate and make tough decisions to stand behind.  Unless, the RB coach just can't make tough decisions.   :dunno

I mean, if a paid position coach cannot decide with confidence who his #1 back is, and who is #2 back is, and who might be a #3 "third down back"..... then it's really on Barthel.

I'm sure Rhule watches and gets involved at times, but he probably is tired of Barthel going with a committee when he is asked "Give me your depth chart".

Barthel used a committee last year (Gabe, Rahmir and Anthony Grant).  Remember Grant was a returning starter but still listed as "OR".

Rahmir got hurt, Grant started to fumble the ball, and then Gabe got hurt.

So then he had to insert RFR Emmett Johnson (not because he was chosen) and Johnson had a pretty good season for a 4th string back.  And Barthel also sprinkled in Fleeks with Johnson and Grant.

And if you look back at Barthel's career, he used a committee with Nebraska, UCONN, and William & Mary.

So I wonder if the guy just gets too close with his player's feelings and can't make a decision?

Not saying I don't like Barthel, I just don't understand why a guy who is getting paid to coach a position and help the players, that ultimately cannot decide a depth chart.

None of this matters a lot, because we all know that when Big Ten games get here, the depth chart will decide itself by the players.
