That just doesn’t make sense for QB when you have a clear #1. If the true freshman is the #1 QB, you start him.

But we’re talking backups. You set things up for a great QB competition in 2021 or 2022 where whoever wins the starting spot between the 3-4 QBs has max eligibility left. That also gives the starter at least 2 years to play, possibly 3 for the oldest guy if Martinez leaves early. If you burn McCaffrey’s redshirt and he’s still the backup, you risk him transferring because he might only have 1 year as the starter.

You must have at least one backup who is capable of running the offense well. And if that backup is a true freshman, then you do not redshirt.

 
What if the true freshman backup, who came here saying that he planned on redshirting because he only had one full year at QB in high school, doesn’t need to play (besides where they squeeze him in the new 4 game allotment) because the starter is so phenomenal, doesn’t get hurt this year, and the 3rd string QB can do mop up duty in our 4 blowout wins?  Still don’t redshirt him? 

Hes going to redshirt. He has a long long way to go. 

 
Noa at the very least is serviceable. He can run enough to keep the D honest and is a fairly good thrower. Depending on how good the OL and skill players are — and potentially they look really good — that could make Noa look better as a QB if Adrian goes down. Plus Noa knows the offense. You hope Luke doesn’t have to burn a RS year.

Disagree. He has 4 games to become capable now. I would have disagreed even before the redshirt rule unless the 3rd stringer was just terrible.

Like I said, you don't burn the redshirt. It's a waste. You've got 4 games to get the guy experience. The only reason to burn the redshirt is if there's an injury or maybe if the 3rd string QB is awful. But even if he is awful, there's no real urgent need to get 5+ games of experience for the backup.

That, or you can continue to recruit high quality quarterbacks and develop their talents.

Just curious (honest question)... in general,  how do pro-prospect quarterbacks feel about redshirting their first season?

How many redshirt QBs turn pro after three seasons?

Haskins comes to mind, and I think plenty do come out as 4th year juniors.

Daniel Jones is one of them.

The question is pretty useless because so many of them transfer which either wastes a year or they save it via redshirt. And since previous years to last one required burning a redshirt to the see the field at all, there is no meaningful sample size for the scenario.

Dunno, and it’s not really relevant as long as the coaches are honest with the recruits on what their plans are. 

Most teams don’t burn a redshirt for the backup QB unless the starter is injured or they need him to win a championship.

I would think burning a redshirt without it serving a greater purpose of winning games seems like a bad idea.  If it's not meaningful snaps, let them play in 4 games and then shut it down unless there is injury.
