I'll take Watson's play calling and winning over what Mangino pulled off tonight against Mizzou.

With Kansas leading by 3, but pinned deep inside the one yard line and under two minutes to play, Mangino calls two pass plays out of the endzone. Both are incomplete so the clock stops. Third down he calls a QB draw which gets stopped for a safety. If Mangino runs the ball even a QB sneak, Mizzou has to call it's last time out, and maybe doesn't get close enough for the game winning field goal. It would have been a game tying field goal except for the safety.

Watson dials up an 80 yard drive to clinch the win at CU. He did the same against Mizzou. I hope I don't see another option from this offense again, but I'm going to quit bashing Watson. He's getting it done with W's. Reminds me of an old tennis book by Jim Courier "Winning Ugly"

How do you run a QB sneak out of the shotgun/spread? Has Reesing EVER been underneath center?

The fat one really, really blew it at the end of that game. KU fans are in total meltdown mode over it, and I don't blame them a bit.

Any support that he had is now gone

 
But, if the play works Kansas fans are happy and Mangino is a God. The play calling argument is always cyclical because if it works you are God, if it fails you are crucified.

The problem goes deeper than play calling, it is simple offensive philosophy in general. Running a Spread like KU and MU run gives you no real opportunity to play power football and grind out the clock. Even with run plays your RB has to start running horizontally to get the ball before he can just run downhill. Spread teams are about scoring fast and using little clock. All of these spread teams end up winning big or losing close. You very rarely see a spread team with two minutes left on the clock run it all out and win the game.

 
While I agree that's what you do in a normal situation....Mangino was probably looking to put the game in the hands of his playmakers. Banged up RB....2 talented wideouts and a qb he thought was heisman worthy a couple months ago....plus missouri was probably thinking run.

Don't forget about Watsons play calling in the fourth quarter against Iowa State when Nebraska defense intercepted and took the ball to the Iowa St 40. What did your hero do he called 3 pass plays and punted. All he had to do was try to run and get in fg range for Alex and Nebraska might have won 10-9 and be 10-2 in the top 15.

 
Many ways of looking at Mangino's play calls at the end. Mizzou did have a timeout left and there were several minutes left. The 2 points from the safety gave the Tigers a chance to win with a field goal. But the safety also gave an additional 20 yards or more in field position to make up. At the end Missouri played for the kick instead of the endzone. If the Squawks would have ran 3 plays and had the punt blocked they'd be hollering that he didn't try a pass!! It seems everyone is jumping on the fat man!!!!
