Watson: "I haven't seen a set of receivers block as well in a game in three decades of coaching."

I just don't like how watson makes these blanket, hyperbolic statements. Earlier this year he said Taylor throws the ball " as well as any QB he's been around"...he said the preseason QB race was the closest he's been around as a position coach, he said Joe Ganz was one of the grittiest players he's ever coached. . I bet the eggs he had yesterday were the best over-easy he's ever salted. Even if it's true, just speak with some perspective once in a while.

Yes i think the same thing...We have some of the best blocking wideouts in the game right now...i just hope that they can get rewarded this weekend for it

he is a coach, what else is he supposed to say.

also, i love hyperbole more than any other human to have ever existed in the history of the universe and your statement was more judgmental than tyra banks is conceited.

He must have never seem film of the Huskers from about 1975 to 2001
Thought the same thing.
I took the quote to mean that of all the teams that he (Watson) has been a part of in his 30 years of coaching, that's the best he's ever seen.

On a side note, Ron Brown is a big reason why those Nebraska teams of the past were successful with downfield blocking. Afterall that was back when he was a dual position coach overseeing both WR & TE during the Osborne & Solich eras. That blocking we're seeing nowadays has Brown's prints all over it.
This. If you don't see Ron Brown's fingerprints all over the wr's blocking, then you aren't paying attention. Thank God that coach Brown decided to come back to DONU. Is there anyway he could do the dual job of TEs/WRs again?

Sure. Finally can Gilmore, have Brown take over both spots and that frees up a position for Joe Ganz to become QB Coach. :koolaid2:

Nebraska passed only 10 times in last week's 48-13 win against Kansas State, but Nebraska wide receivers kept plenty busy putting their helmets into the chests of defensive backs.
"As receivers, all of us want the ball," said senior Niles Paul. "But we realize that we've got a good running game and it's going for us, and if that's what it takes for us to go undefeated this year, we're going to block."

Downfield blocks by Paul, Brandon Kinnie and Mike McNeill have helped spring some long touchdown runs this year.

Against Kansas State, Nebraska had four touchdown runs of 35 yards or longer. Heading into Saturday's Texas game, Nebraska has 15 touchdowns of 31 yards or more.

That doesn't happen without good perimeter blocking.

"It speaks to their character," said offensive coordinator Shawn Watson of his receivers. "You have to understand the big picture. It is about one thing. It's about winning football games. They've embraced their role. They're having fun with it. They take a lot of pride in it. There are no lazy steps on the film.

"Everybody is always turning it up and finding work, which is our motto. We want it to be like a buzz saw."

Remember that other thread where everyone was bitching about Paul not being a team player etc etc etc?

Yea.

The good new for Paul is that it isn't like the NFL scouts are looking at ESPN stat lines and thinking, "Well obviously he's not League material."

They know what he's doing, what he's capable of. And as Taylor grows into the position, I think we have a good reason to think that Watson will continue to open up the passing game, which will in turn make our running stronger.
